I have been helping a friend with his 90g reef. All of his parameters are in check and I we would like to start adding some SPS. The main problem is that he is only running VHO's. They are 4 48" tubes on an Icecap 660 ballast. What are the chances of this being good enough to keep a couple of different stonies?

I would say montis (atleast test the waters with a cheap cap) and digi's, anything more then those would have to be placed high up and are going to be a rough ride trying to keep

You don't see many VHO systems anymore but some of the most sucessful systems I have ever seen have been lit by VHO only. VHO will not compare to MH or some of the newer T5 setups with good individual reflectors but they still pack a lot of power without producing gobs of heat. I still use VHO Super Actinics to supplement my MH as they provide the best coloration of any bulb.

Its going to be trial and error on coral placement but most anything should grow fine if it is placed well.
