Hello all,

New to R2R but felt like my story should be shared

I run a 60g long mixed reef tank with a fluval 307, 4 ai prime hds and a bubble Magnus qq3 skimmer.

Typical parameters are:
Salinity: 1.025
Temp: 78.5
Alk: 8
Nitrate: 2-5
Nitrite and Ammonia: 0
Phosphate is a little higher: .25
Mag: 1440
Cal: 380

I purchased vibrant 3 days ago to help me fight some gha algae I have had for 2 months. I pick it regularly but just wanted to finally get rid of it. Turns out this is the worst tank decision I’ve ever made.

My tank was healthy and doing well until I used vibrant. 48 hours after putting it in I had 3 euphyllia corals on the brink of death. Now 72 hours after, I have 4 euphyllia + another coral all dying and fear more is to come.

I will be doing a 20% water change tonight but wondering if anyone has any other recommendations to get it out ASAP. I dosed 5ml as I’m guessing I have about 50gal of actual water. Pictures of the tank and coral now below.

It is a bacteria blend and some of the strains live on surfaces. A water change may not get rid of it but its worth a try. If any is in the water column maybe a UV light will kill it.
Just unproven ideas

At the suggestion of lfs I used vibrant years ago and lost all my torches and my hammers . The store representative who sold it to me said “oh! I thought I told you to start out using 1/4 dose of recommended to start “ He didn’t and I made him aware of my displeasure and loss of coral . I threw it away and did a fifty percent water change and waited it out doing regular maintenance. To my tank it was poison but a lot of people swear by it .maybe if I started 1/4 dose things would have been different but for me never again . I wish you luck but other than doing a water change ( fifty percent might be too drastic but for me I didn’t have anyone to help me with info help with this product ) so please if anyone else can help this reefer with more info as how to neutralize the effect of Vibrant please chime in !!!!!!

Just did a 25% so hoping that will help. Will definitely look at getting a UV ASAP!

Sorry that sounds worse than my situation! I’m dipping the stuff that’s in really bad shape and hoping it comes around. I’ll be pooring it down the drain and will never use random chemicals again lol!!

I’m not telling you to pour it down the drain , if you don’t want to use it again you could try selling it to a friend . Maybe I did have a worse case but like I said a lot of people I know swear by it . Just letting you know what happened when I used it and what I did . I encouraged anyone else to chime in Incase someone else out their has a better solution for you other than water change . Good luck

Just an update, so far I have lost one torch and the red coral above. My whole tank is half open at best and most corals are completely closed. I have certain corals going to complete skeleton in spots. I wrote an email to vibrant but have yet to hear a reply. I’m doing my second 25% water change tonight. If anyone has any suggestions for countering or eliminating vibrant from a tank please let me know!!!!! Also does anyone know how long vibrant stays in a system??

Also worthy of mention here. There are two varieties of Vibrant available for salt water aquariums.
One is for "Saltwater" and the other is for "Reef Aquariums". Which product did you dose?
I dose 15 ml biweekly in a mixed reef of a 140 gallons with no ill effects.
First thing I checked!

Forget the Vibrant.

Three things got rid of my cyano:

1) Strong UV light
2) Started an Oxydator (look for threads on this site)
3) Phytoplankton every other day

Before and after pics (also have since increased the light intensity by 5% on my Radions)

You have an absolutely beautiful tank! I dosed vibrant to kill my hair algae issue and now it’s killing all my coral instead.
