Hi everyone. I’m new to the hobby and had a couple of questions.
I’m hearing water sloshing noises followed by draining. I’ve tried moving the high-precision valve on the down flow pipe with no luck. I previously had air bubbles coming from the return into the display tank but that was taken care of by adding more water to the sump. I feel like the tank is really loud compared to the ones at the fish store. Has anyone had this happen before? If so, what fixed the problem?

Question 2: What do you have your wave makers set to? We have the Gyre wave maker at 40%. We noticed the sand has dips scattered around. We removed all of the air pockets in the sand (or so we thought) but I think the wave makers are moving the sand around creating more air pockets. Should the wave makers be pointed straight across? What flow pattern do you recommend? We plan on having a mix of corals in the future (once we have a better understanding of the care). We’re still in the cycling stage. The Syna-G cloud mobile app keeps glitching back to the home screen without letting me touch it, so I’ve been using the actual device to modify the wave patterns.

Tank info:
- 425 Red Sea
- Display tank is 91 gal, total system water volume is 114 gal
- We have a ReefRun 9000 DC pump (set to 20% intensity)

I’ve attached a video of the sloshing sounds. Please let me know if the video does not play.

Thank you in advance for any and all feedback.

I suspect if you turn off the return pump that sound will go away. If it does, you've got some sort of mismatch between the drain valve and the return pump flow. It sounds like maybe water is going down the emergency overflow to me.

I don't know how much that pump flows ,but I can say that you only really need 1-2x sump to tank turnover. So you likely can turn that pump down even more.

But you need to match these two things up, return pump and drain valve, so water is about 1/4" below the emergency drain.

It's the ReefRun 9000 DC pump

We've adjusted the valve so the water is 1/4" below the emergency drain and it's significantly quieter. Thank you so much:)

Awesome.

Took me a while to figure the synergy out.

I’m down to a little under 1x sump to tank turnover.

Relying on wave makers for primary flow is better, and significantly quieter :)
