After some life changes, I’m setting up two new reef tanks in my apartment. I still have a Waterbox 160 running (without me) for the past year in my old house that I am going to have to tear down soon. That was live for 4 years before that. Since that won’t fit in my new place, I ordered a Waterbox 60 about a month ago. Still waiting for that and got impatient! So I grabbed a 15 Gal Peninsula from my local reef club yesterday.

I’m super excited about the 15G, it’s been probably 15 years since I did a nano build. A lot has changed since then! They did an awesome custom reef scape on it, so it was really just plug and play. I have it wet and going to run it no lights for a month to get a good bio film. Going to grab the few remaining fish from my old place shortly (sad 😢) and probably will wrangle some bubble tip anemones.

I’m having some troubles deciding on equipment for this tank. I threw in the heater I bought for my 60, so that’s just a temp placement. The return pump is very low flow, the nozzle goes through a 3/8 Inch hole in the back wall. I am not sure what kind of a return pump I can use for this. The current is about 70 gph, so I was thinking an AI Axis 20 but it’s a 1/2” output. I’m not sure if I can just downsize the output to the smaller hose I already have?

Filtration on the back is a filter sock chamber, followed by carbon and media in bags with some foam blocks in center chamber, followed by the return pump. I am thinking I’ll swap the sock for filter floss and smash & bag a bunch of live rock from my 160 to put under it.

I am still looking for a light, probably going to wait for a small Kessil to show up on the dry goods section.

More pics to come as I get it set up, and hopefully my 60 comes in the next couple weeks! I’ve been really bummed not having a tank around this past year, so I am excited to get back at it.

Update on my setup, I retrieved two fish from my 160 - a black snowflake clownfish and a six-line wrasse. I had a couple others in there, but without disturbing the rock too much this was what I could get. I think it is too early to move any bubble tip anemones, so I am going to hold on that. I also saw some suspect algae on the rock, so I am not sure I want to move any live rock anymore. I don't have a great quarantine option right now.

I have a Jebao SLW-3 on order from Amazon to get some flow in the tank, and I have cobbled some tubing together to adapt an AI Axis 20 return pump. I have some better tubing and adapter coming from Amazon tomorrow to reduce the Axis 1/2" outlet to a 3/8". I also got an order together from @Bulk Reef Supply for a Kessil A80 and a control wire to my Apex, some StartUp bacteria, and some Tropic Marin All-for-Reef for when I need to start dosing trace minerals. I am still a few weeks from turning the lights on, and hopefully just 2 weeks until the EX 60 comes in.

Unfortunately the Axis 20 is doing an odd start-stop thing, it will run full speed for 30 seconds or so, then shut down to bare minimum flow, and 30 seconds to a minute later it starts back up again. It is in this constant loop. No issues connecting in the app, and I tuned it down to 95% for top end. Emailed with support and it is unclear what they are doing, but they asked for a shipping address so I think it might be a known issue. I have an Axis 90 still unopened for my other tank, so their resolution on this one will guide me on if I should keep it or not. I like the compact footprint.

Setting this nano tank has been nice because it has let me test some of the equipment that is going onto my EX 60, like the Trident that I haven't run in 2 years when it clogged from me not changing the reagent for a month or so. It took a lot of elbow grease to get the crystallized saltwater out of the tubes, reset the tubes, etc, but I finally got it calibrated last night so I am going to leave it running on the nano until my 60 comes in to be sure it doesn't clog again. Also testing the Tunze 3 ATO, I like it a lot so I may buy the nano version for this tank when I move this one to my 60. I also have a Neptune ATO on the 160 that I can move over, but I replace it every 8-12 months so might as well plan for attrition now!

So I heard back from Aquaillumination about the Axis pump that keeps changing speeds/pulsing down and back up again. They gave me a beta software on it to test, but this did not fix anything. So far the only fix I have found is to set it to 99% instead of 100%. My theory is it is still a software/firmware issue since 99 works but 100 causes an issue.

I also started the same tank. I am using Cobalt 150 W heater in the first compartment.
This return pump seems to fit diagonally but without much effort into the third chamber : syncra silent 0.5 which is 185 gph.

Are you running the filter sock too or did you opt for some other mechanical filtration?
