So about 6 months ago I was having some beers with some friends and in my inebriated state I stumbled across a Nano Cube on Amazon. I thought to myself, man it would be cool to have a little 10 gallon in my living room. So after a 15 year hiatus from Saltwater I decided to start some research. A 10 gallon nano cube quickly became a Red Sea 20 gallon AIO, then I was like meh, might as well go with their 40, meh, why not the 54....oh...they are still out of stock after months and months? Screw it, Waterbox 80 gallon! haha

Back when I was having it in my living room upstairs it had its own little closet for equipment. Which I sadly had to tear down when I decided to go bigger and put the tank downstairs. Oh well.

While I was waiting I built my mixing station, plumbed the RODI to the sink and put in a couple of float valves, then instead of hard pvc plumbing I just decided to drop a pump into the RODI bin and route a hose to the salt bin where I also dropped in a cheap powerhead for mixing and picked up some smart plugs so I could just pull up an app and start it up.

Then the day finally came

Got everything built, set the tank on the stand then started my wiring project over again. No way I was going to spend $150 for a wooden box that was going into a cabinet so I built my own control board out of $30 peg board, bonus, I was able to zip tie all the mounts so I can re-arrange as needed! Clean tight bundles!

Then time to set up the sump. I plan to run a fuge with the apex GRO, filter cups, and a BRS carbon reactor to start. If I need to I will have plenty of space for a skimmer with a DIY aquamesh baffle. Also running an Apex COR 20, their ATO and their leak sensors. Lastly an Apex auto-feeder.

Decided to go with Caribsea rock and set that up today. I want to create a cherry blossom tree since I am from DC and have also always loved Japanese culture. I'm thinking some sort of flowy pink-ish coral, maybe Euphyillia or Goni, then I'll have mushrooms at the base of the tree. The rocks on the right are supposed to look like a hill but I can't get them to cooperate, I may still fiddle or just leave as is if you guys think it looks good. I also figure it will be more of a hill with some SPS growing on top, then I will have LPS and Zoa's towards the bottem. I also picked up a Radion 15 blue today and a rail, then an MP 40. I'll eventually pick up another MP 40 and 1 or 2 more Radions depending how much light I end up needing.

Let me know what you guys think of that scape, it just isn't there for me yet but I don't know, I think the only way to get a steeper "hill" would be for me to start drilling and get some poles. That will also make it more stable which will give me some piece of mind. 20210426_135510.jpg

Finally decided on a scape. I call it "Tree and a Hobbit Hole", you might be able to see the little footpath I added, nice little touch to the gimmick I think. Haha.

It took a long while, and a lot of farmers carries, but I finally have water in the tank, mixed in half the salt, neglected to realize that salt adds about 3.5% volume so it was full before salt, so I did half, now waiting for evap to finish up. Once it's at 35 ppt I'll start my DR Tims cycle.

Forgot to mention I added an MP40 on the far side. Just running basic lagoon right now to keep everything moving. I have a Radion 15 Blue I will install after my lid from Kraken comes! Once I'm ready for coral I'll get a second MP40 and a second Radion.

Started up my Dr Tims cycle, on day 4 ammonia is .05, but still no nitrite. I guess it just takes time, or maybe because I have the life rock. My first shipment from algea barn also showed up today Soni added in the marine pure and the fritz, so now I have even more bacteria. This may take a while. Haha. Oh well, my lid still isn't here so no hurry. Installed a Wyze camera as well, so now I have a little piece of mind if I'm ever gone for an extended amount of time, plus it makes tank pics easy. Haha

Let there be light! And a Lid! And another light! And chicken wings! Finished up the cycle right as my chaeto from AB showed up! Then my Lid from Kraken came today and so I was able to get my Radion set up. For now just one, but later once I'm ready for Coral I'll get another. I also decided to put a check valve on the return since the Peninsulas have the OF at the end and you can't point the nozzles up unless you want to just shoot water all over the place. Man, it's been exactly a month from building my stand to getting a fish tomorrow. After my first Covid shot I came home and built the stand. Now today after my second I did did deadlifts and then the finishing touches with the light and lid!

My LFS does in store QT and nothing was available 2 weeks ago, but today I got in and got my first grump. He quickly found a "burrow" to hang out in. I'll get him a pistol buddy next week.

Hadn't seen the goby in about 4 days, water was good, but I wasn't sure. So I went to the LFS to get some hermits and snails just incase he bit the dust. Right on que when I walk in the door he has his little head poked out of his favorite cave.

While I was the getting the CUC I decided to take home this dude also!

Had my first bit of difficulty yesterday. My watchman was hanging out on top of my MP40 which made me nervous, so I took off the lid and tried to nudge him off of it, instead he jumped straight up and landed BEHIND THE TANK!!! I has to get my grabber claw and roll him about 3 feet to the end of the tank. Covered in whatever was back there I got him in a net and into the tank. Looked dead for a good 15 seconds before he peped up and swam off. Back to his normal grumpy self today!

Picked up 4 Chromis and a Lawnmower today. The Lawnmower immediately went for the Gobies favorite cave so the Goby is extra grumpy. No pictures of him yet, will get one once he gets comfortable.

Unfortunately it looks like one of the Chromis got injured being bagged at the LFS or got seriously nipped in the bag. Huge red spot on the tail fin joint area and is not using it at all. But all 4 eagerly ate when I fed and he is swimming around upright now. So we will see how the tail fin goes.

Almost 2 weeks and the injured Chromis is still going. I do think he is on his way out though because he is hiding all day except during feeding time. The LFS admitted fault since they out all 4 in a small bag and offered me a replacement. Went to pick it up today, fell right into the school and looks super happy. Also decided to pick up this guy while I was there.

Finally picked up a pistol for my goby. The Blennie has run him out of most of the premium cave locations so I figured get him a digger.

Also picked up my first coral, it is a Clove, only been in about 20 minutes, dip was clean, and of course a hermit immediately started cleaning the plug base so I don't think it will open anytime soon.

I went to an LFS that specializes more in corals and the dude confused the hell out of me. He is super old school, doesn't like LED's and relies 100% on water changes, no skimmer, no nothing. He told me not.to use the AB+ setting on my Radions and instead to make a custom setting but didn't tell me what custom. So thoroughly confused I kept them on the AB+ then put them to 10% power and put in acclimation mode for 3 days. It's a clove, so I'm hoping it's not too finiky. Too little light is better than too much light I've heard so I'll go slow.

Also have my MP 40s set to 35% at the other end of the peninsula. Might have to adjust those, we will see.

Tank is looking good mate, would you be able to show where the MP40 is to see if it fits next to the overflow box?
Thinking of getting one of these tanks for myself but need those MP40's to fit.
Many thanks mate
