Recently got a nice zoa. I placed it on its own rock on my sandbed. Yesterday I noticed it was turned a different direction. Today when I picked up the frag plug that my zoa is attached to (probably a Halloween hermit overpowered my epoxy work), I noticed it was partially severed at the stalk a 1/4 inch below the skirt. Since I needed to re-epoxy the plug onto my rock again, I also epoxied the cut. It looked like a purple algae was trying to grow where the cut was. Not a lot of flow where it sits now. It seemed perfect a few days ago. Any idea what would severe the stalk and do you think epoxying the cut was a good call?

difficult to provide input without pictures. going off your description it could've been a sponge or algae as you say. i'd say you did good by epoxying over it.

I have seen Halloween hermits eat soft corals (also seen emeralds eat zoas) so my guess would be the hermit is to blame (given his proximityto the issue). As far as epoxying it, I dont know that it was bad or good. . . Soft corals cannot be glued down like stoney corals. However, I have used glue to hold down softies long enough that they can grab onto the plug/on their own. Maybe epoxying it will allow it time to heal/reattach?

Here is a pic I just took, it is hanging in there. Wasn’t sure if it was algae, bacteria, or something bad at the cut on the stalk. I do have 5 Halloween hermits on the prowl, and my one emerald hasn’t been seen in over a month, but might of come out reclusion for a taste.

difficult to tell after zooming in. i can tell where the zoa is, but nothing else. is the white the epoxy/glue? not referring to what's under the plug, but on the with the zoa on the plug.

The white on the plug was epoxy from the supplier. It currently looks stressed from its appearance early this week. Maybe I’ll find a different location for it or stick it in the refugium.
