Not going to say the name but I walked into a saltwater store that's apart of a large chain. I only shop at my buddies store, over 17,000 gallons of tanks. Problem is he's closed Monday and Tuesday. Anyway this place had some ugly brown concrete looking balls labeled as "premium live rock" for only 13$ a pound. No coralline at all. An employe noticed me looking at the tank and thought I was going to buy some. I told him how I have 100 pounds of rock in my 55 gallon and I'm in no need of rock and polite fully declined. He asked how old my tank is and I told him 3 years. He also went on to ask how old the rock is. I told him two years. He then told me that someone with my experience should know that you have to replace your live rock every six months.... This is the reason I don't shop chain stores haha

That's a first, replace the rock every six months.. I have visited a couple stores in my area over the past couple of weeks and its amazing to hear the advice they give. I don't know if they are trying to up sales or if they think their advice is correct and maybe that's why all their livestock is in poor health.

I would have politely had a small chat with the manager at that point. There is no reason they should be giving out bad advice to their unsuspecting customers...

Unfortunately he was the store manager......

All I can say is wow... I sure hope his customers find a good reef site online to verify his claims. He is a crooked business owner and makes the legitimate ones look so much better if the customers call his bluff.

I thought it was every 3 months.... lol I don't think I'd be abke to keep a straught face in that situation. You should have asked him why you have to replace it haha

Haha, I didn't want to stay, you know what they say "only an idiot argues with an idiot".

Man he must be making loads of money selling his customers live rock every six months. lol

Ohio I know exactly where you are talking about, this is the same place we have discussed privitaly, LETS GO IN AND LAUGH AT THEM. We will probably get banned for life from their store however who cares they have been ripping people off for years...

Its funny the lfs's by me have been around forever but they still know nothing. A couple of weeks ago there was this guy at one and he has worked there forever too. He was arguing with me. He goniopora labeled as favia... He kept telling me it was favia, lol because they look so much the same.

"only an idiot argues with an idiot".

I need to remember this.

I only replace after every 8 months and it works well for me. The thing is, it is hard to get my acros to start encrusting again,
after I break them off with a monkey wrench. Then, I can't remember the exact location I had the coral to begin with. But my fish
really seem to enjoy the excitement of the whole event.

Haha!! Lets do it! I knew you'd know which one i was talking about. The thing that makes me mad is they know what things are worth. For example I brought in a maxima clam that I was bringing to phisy but just for kicks wanted to see how much they'd give me. They said that its more of a service then a trade and they'll do me a favor and take it for free. Ha! They get in 7$ mushrooms and label them as exotic and ask 40$ 40$ for one brown mushroom???? Phisy gave me this 13 inch beauty sebae for the clam. ImageUploadedByReef2Reef Aquarium Forum1370972214.323856.jpg

Although hilarious, this kind of terrible advice really hurts the hobby and damages the reputation that so many are working hard to change. This is exactly why I cant watch certain aquarium-related television shows.

Now here's a stupid question from a very new reefer, reading this you would probably think I would be the one customer in that store to believe what they say... Lol
Do you really have to change live rock? If you really do, that's news to me..
Please don't think I'm completely dumb, I learn something new every day!!! Lol
