just set up my 150g (200g total volume)and I'm new to sps. I have 3x 250w MH set-up and will get t5 supplementary (either 2x 54w, or 2x 80w) I have a K4 and K2 in there now and plan to buy 2 more powerheads that push 3000gph each.

so what are some good for newbies sps, or are they pretty much the same for the most part?

I have my eye on the ORA Ice Tort Acro is this a good one to start with?

I don't know if I'd start with Torts and it really depends how stable your system is right now. How long has your system been setup and what are your water params? If you want to try some SPS out I'd start with a ORA Green Birdsnest or some different kinds of montis. Birdsnest and monti's tend to be the more hearty of the different sps.

While ORA SPS are pretty hearty, they are also a bit more expensive. I would start with maybe a purple or green monti cap, a sunset monti, or digitata. These are fairly easy to keep. If those start to encrust and grow for you, they you could step into the ORA corals. Reefer (above) is correct that the ORA Green Birdsnest is a fast grower and easy to keep. I would hold off on anything "wild" as they are the most difficult to keep. You system needs to be VERY stable (alk, ca, salinity, mag, PO4, and NO3) in order to keep some of the higher end SPS.

Hope that helps. Keep us posted on your experiences as new SPS keepers will benefit from this.

I would try some slimers green and purple they are usually pretty hardy. Also some of the tricolor valida type acros are fairly tolerant also. My number one tip is to start dipping your sps from the first piece you dont want to wait till you have a lot of money to find out you got a pest from one of the pieces.

Along with the others, try some montipora,or some little yellow porites.IMO they are pretty hardy.

Stability and clean parameters will be important. My first sps was the ORA green birds nest, and your everyday orange cap. ORA corals are all raised in captivity for a minimum of 3 generations, so they are some of the easier ones to keep. If you go with the ORA green birds nest, don't get used to all of your SPS growing at that rate, because it's one of the fastest growers I've kept.

I have officially started my coral collection. check the pics

LFS had a half off on all coral sale....I wanted to buy more, but my wallet couldn't afford it

They seem like some reasonable starting pieces. Just be patient and make sure they are attached well. I find that sps grows much better when it is attached firmly. It will also take a little bit before you might notice some growth. Just eb patient and it will come.

the pieces you got look great.

I love ponape here is a pic of mine
