What breed is my clownfish

I been looking all over my area and can't find a clown that looks like mine. All the ones I find are very light in color and mostly don't have the black fading into the Orange. I paid 20 bucks for this little guy turning out to be a beautiful fish.

I would say a mocha occy.....but as clownfish grow, their colors often get darker.

Percula -9 Dorsal Spines, Ocellaris 10 Dorsal Spines
Eye - Percula More orange around the pupil, Ocellaris more black around the pupil

Can't see close enough to count dorsal fins, but the eyes say it's an Ocellaris. The dark colors make me lean towards Mocha/Black Occy. Would have to get a better shot of the dorsal fin to be sure, but the eyes say Occy.

I agree that better pics will help in a more positive ID though counting spines isn't always proff positive. From the pic you have posted I'd lean toward a mocha occy as well.

Yeah it's eyes are more black it's hard to count the spikes on the fin. And really hard to get a clear pic of it all I have is an iPhone 6 to take pics with, and it never keeps still esp when I get close to the tank it goes nuts.

Yep, what I posted is a rule of thumb on both the dorsal count and the eye color, but it's right probably 95% of the time. There are always exception to the rule, but these are the most common ways to distinguish the two types.

You will honestly never be able to tell what this fish truly is with out A. DNA testing, B. Breeding him with a wild oc. or C. Backtracking where he came from.


This stems from all the hybridization now a days. While we still operate of the rule of the eyes and dorsal spikes these methods are not tell all like previously stated.

My educated guess would be standard Ocellaris probably crossed with Darwin.
