I had a nitrate reading of 5.0 from my LFS so I decided to buy my own API Nitrate test kit and had different results. What do you think?

Looks like 80 nitrate on that api test kit but there is a conversion somwehere where if you have nitrite then something about way alot nitrate tests work, they convert to nitrite then nitrate or something like this and even having a very low nitrite reading will give you sky high nitrates,if your tank isn't a new tank and has no nitrites disregard.
I know personally i got told dont trust api test kits as known for being inacurate but saying that seen alot say api nitrate is ok.
But for me i only needed to know if had low, medium or high nitrates and didn't need an exact number but now my api nearly ran out im currently waiting better recommended test kits ,also may look darker as you got resting down on a dark background, they work best having natural daylight bejind you

Should I do a water change or get it tested again?
As you get many tests in api tests,i would test again and make sure do test exactly as it says ( not saying you didnt first time ) if it says shake bottle 2 hard for 30 seconds then do and shake for 1 minute then do and use timer and do in natural light and is this a new tank cycling or established tank ? Reason being that if got a nitrite reading then can give false high readings on the nitrate.

"make sure do test exactly as it says ( not saying you didnt first time )"...

very next statement...

"if it says shake bottle 2 hard for 30 seconds then do and shake for 1 minute then do and use timer"...

Well intentioned, good advice initially , but do follow the instructions. If it says do something, that does not mean do it twice, or twice as long...

Ummm yes my english grammar terrible indeed.not even sure how the " 2" got in there, think maybe just went through steps in my head and what i was thinking just wrote down but for someone not used to using this test kit, could get very confusing.

What i tried saying is
Follow instructions exactly
And in step 4 make sure you shake bottle vigourously for 30 seconds.
Step 6 make sure shake vigorously for 1 minute.
And use a timer as what may seem like 30 or 60 seconds without a timer, may not actually be.

Well spotted as even though said follow instructions,op may have thought its best to do procedures twice aslong and they may of come to conclusion ,hey if twice aslong is better then shaking for 10 minutes fantastic.
But yeah follow instructions just as they say, thats what they are there for.

Good sport, and your point is still valid. Consistency is key to repeatable results.
