Was looking through my folder of aquarium photos and noticed sometime around 2015 all the bubble tipped anemones basically became LTAs. Even here and on the internet most BTAs are strung out “most of the time” according to the owners. Was it the trend to blue light, LEDs, higher nutrients, etc? I’m about to add a BTA to an LED tank, but currently all my anemones are under mh/t5s and they bubble. Lankiest photo I could find of one of mine was almost ten years ago. He has split countless times and at worst he is American football tipped anemone. Any other old timers notice this trend?

Id venture to guess LED vs T5/MH myself too.

Ive had some OG roses and greens get bubbley every now and then under LEDs though.

I did wonder if it was aquaculture vs captured. I really have no idea where they came from 15-20 years ago. Now I would venture the over whelming majority are cultured.

No one knows why they do it. Imo its not due (or at least not strongly related ) to the difference in the source of light. The same anemone can change itself back and forth and I have seen bubbletips in all shapes and sizes under LED.

Maybe trend to softer water. I’m sure it’s combination of things it’s just weird how what used to be weird behavior is now the norm it seems like.

If you ever find why.
Please TELL ME !!

Mine get the lankiest if I don’t feed for a long time like pictured below:

it’s not a huge change but it is consistent. The only other thing that’s consistent is about half of mine close for an hour after the day lights go off.

Good looking!
I target feed her as little as possible (1x 2week) for fear of encouraging her to split... if it really does.

By chance do you know the PAR in this place. Look like pretty good high light.

this subject has been running for years without really having a tangible answer. I don't think we'll find the answer today, but I'm going to feed more to try.

My LFS has a tank overgrown with rose tip anemones. Half of them are bubble tip and half of them have strung out. I over heard a customer discussing the same topic. Saying the one he purchased has strung out, and asking what causes that. The owner was saying he doesn’t know why.

Very interesting observation!

I blast my tanks with light. A year ago I was running Mh at around 300 on that rock. I switched to LEDs when my chiller burned out and now it’s only around 220-250 depending on which side I measure.

Only other thing I can think of is I don’t feed often (7-10 days) but I feed big. Like whole silverside or whole shrimp big.

My RBTA's never bubbled until it started dosing Reef Moonshine.
