What is my urchin doing?

Urchin was releasing white dots and it clouded up my tank. Is it a boy or what is this? Also how long until my tank clears up?

yes it's a boy. it's a perfectly healthy urchin

How do you know it is a boy? Looks like eggs to me. You may be right, I don't know much about them.

Actually i might be wrong on the whole male urchin thing. I do know that it is just the urchin spawning however. Urchins spawn in something called “broadcast spawning”. Both the male and female release everything into the water and urchins form in the open from them. So it could also be a female.

It did look more like dots in the water. It’s honestly very hard finding videos of sea urchins spawning regardless of male or female. I’ve been trying to find videos to compare lol

Starfish do the same thing.

Actually i take that back, its starfish in the documentary. But its the same type of reproducing.

I found the thread but couldn’t tell from the pic. Was yours releasing white dots or just a cloud? Mine was spewing white dots like crazy and then it turned cloudy

Mine released just a cloud, it sounds like yours is a female because of the dots.

I know thats the case with starfish but I’m almost certain each urchin is either male or female.

Thats true, i know quite a bit about certain animals but i am definitely not an expert
