What is the best Potassium Additive?

Hey all,
Just running a little low potassium even after a water change it no longer replenishes it all. What is the best potassium product out there that you recommend to dose into my reef tank?

My tank never needed any, and there’s no inherent reason a tank should need it, but if demand from growing tissue is higher than additions from foods, then it can be needed.

While there are some kits available, ICP may be a better bet.

Thank you for the advice. I am just trying to figure out why we cannot keep SPS alive and thought this could be why. We have been in the saltwater fish world a long time...over 30 years with just fish, and about four years or so ago, we started with corals. I do know, Alk, Ca, Mg, NO2, NO3, Phos, and more but these are stable.

That is not the exact brand I mentioned, but that one looks like a good choice. It has a small amount of magnesium hydroxide carbonate in it, which will give a tiny boost to alk, pH, and magnesium, but probably too small to ever detect.

Are you sure? It looks like it’s just food grade potassium chloride. The ingredients only say potassium chloride.

Are you sure? It looks like it’s just food grade potassium chloride. The ingredients only say potassium chloride.

Under “Additional Details” the ingredients list magnesium hydroxide carbonate.

The best product to use would be food or other high grade of potassium chloride.

Potassium chloride is 52% potassium by weight.

To boost 100 L of aquarium water by 15 ppm (mg/L), you would need to add 15 mg/L x 100 L = 1500 mg = 1.5 grams of potassium.

If you dissolve 28.8 grams of potassium chloride (which contains 15 grams of potassium) in 1 L of RO/Di, then it contains 1.5 grams for every 100 mL of solution.

Using that dosing solution, you would add 100 mL to boost potassium in 100 L by 15 ppm.

You are awesome thank you! Can I double the grams into the one liter or would that be overkill? I am using Loud Wolf KCl, which is 99% Pure/ Food grade

Thanks and yes, you can double it. Potassium chloride is quite soluble.

I would be extra carful adding K. Salifert test kit is a piece of crap and is not to be trusted. Tropic Marin has a more accurate one but is a pain to use
