My devils finger leather has been irritated by something for a long time. Its shrunk and is leaning. I spotted some aptasia at the bass of it which I have dealt with but its not returning to its original shape and position. I did notice some weird yellow blobs at the base of it. Does anyone know what these are?

Looks like a sponge, though I doubt that is what’s causing the irritation to the leather coral. It doesn’t appear to be growing on the corals tissue.

Thanks for the ID. Are sponges bad news? You are correct they are not touching the flesh.

Most sponges are generally regarded as neutral or beneficial, though there are certain types that are considered nuisances/pests because they can take over and smother coral, grey sponges come to mind.
