What is the history of this?
Is the fish still able to eat?

It looks most probably like an injury with some material stuck on it. However, if it developed over a long period, some tumors can be that color and texture.

Fish is eating and acting normal. It came on quickly.

It does look like an injury with some detritus stick to it. I’ve seen a similar thing happen with bristleworm spines.

Not a crab. May be sediment. Often ,,, without netting, if you approach a fish with a net, it will eject what's hanging from its mouth
