I'm setting up a marineland 125 gallon dual overflow tank. I don't know what return pump I need for this build. I think the tank is rated up to 600 gallons per hour. but not sure on that i'll email marineland or call them tomorrow to find out for sure.

Buy a DC pump, you can scale the flow for whatever you need DCT 12000 Jebao or similar size would work great

I use a 12000 on a 180, should be fine with 8000 10000 or 12000 or similar size in any of the jebao series. Great pumps had them running non stop for years

Are you going to run one return pump or two? I'm on my second big marineland corner-flo tank and I like to run two pumps for redundancy purposes. In any case, I believe they say 600 gph is the recommended max flow for all their big tanks with two overflows/returns. When I read that, I assumed that meant each overflow/return could handle 600 gph, so a single pump putting out 1200 gph or one each doing 600 would be fine. I'm talking true flow, measured flow rates here---not max rated flow on the pump(s). In any case, my tanks have always handled ~ 1000 gph true flow for each return/overflow with no problem. HTH

And I second getting a DC pump. I'd get one with max flow that has twice what you think you need. I have two Sicce Synchra SDC 9.0 pumps that I love that operate with max flow between 1000 - 2500 gph

I would recommend a stronger pump than 600gph. Depending on how you set up your tank, you can build a manifold to feed reactors and other equipment. If the pump is too strong just dial it down if you end up with a dc pump or just add a ball valve to control the flow

funny you mentioned manifold. I have another post on here to see other peoples manifolds for there returns. I plan on doing a combination of hard and soft plumbing.

I have a manifold on my current tank and plan on using one on this new one. I'm going to use the same concept . St the top I'm going to get rid of the ball valve the use a y adaptor and then some more pvc and then add 2 ball valves one for each return line then from there soft plumb it.
