I've decided that instead of running a fuge on this new build I want to instead try an algae scrubber. I'm reading from many comments that they are super effective, almost too much the point of stripping all nutrients. Which makes me think that I should maybe undersize it. Initially I was looking at the Clearwater 200, but now I'm wondering if the CW 100 would be better at maintaining my nutrients without bottoming them out.

you can undersize, but you can also get the proper size and just dial down the photoperiod if it gets too aggressive at stripping nutrients. I'd opt for undersize because they are so effective, and you can always dial light timer up or down as needed, and the smaller one should save you some space and $. For what it's worth, I bought a "cheap" icecap scrubber for my reefer 350 and it works like a charm. Those CW units are beautiful but dang are the expensive. You could also consider the upflow airstone driven scrubbers, they work great and take up even less space.
