I am moving rapidly into an SPS dominant tank. In an effort to get my tank ready for SPS, I spent a few dollars on my lighting system. While I bought plenty of PAR, I seem to have purchased 2 - 3 degrees of heat. I dropped in a pic below showing my temperature swings. My LFS is suggesting to me that I would be better off averaging a 76 F degree temp.

I am wondering if people here agree that is needed. : ) 76 F seems a bit.... low. He wants to sell me a chiller : )

76 seems low. Mines generally 78.5, I do think steady is as important as perfect...
Before I changed my lighting, I was staying between 77.5 and 78.5... religiously. The heater came on at 77.5 and cut off at 78.5... Now, my heater never kicks on. I am averaging 78.48 now. I don’t mind getting a chiller. I love gadgets! I am not sure it is worth it for a 1 degree drop...

I guess what I am asking is this... is being at an average temp of 78.5... with high spikes reaching 79.6 a problem worth spending a thousand dollars on?

Yes sir... I like to keep it on the cooler side.
[/QUOTEI posted this thread in the “SPS Discussions” group on purpose. Everyone that has responded has said they are keeping their temps about.... 2 degrees lower that what my tank is currently capable of.

I am actually starting to lean towards the idea of getting a chiller.
