The most so far I spent on a fish was $100 on a purple tang. I would love a chevron tang.

Seems like we are going fish/coral route

The most I spent on 1 coral was a wwc bounce. I bought a pack so no hard set price on bounce, but the pack price was $725

Looks like I am not alone in my arbitrary cutoff point.

Coral aren't my wheelhouse I am cheap with them, I almost started a new thread on coral separately.

Here is a tip:
Get your "story" straight if you buy an expensive fish.
You don't want your significant other knowing what you paid for a single fish.
( In my case a three year old Gem Tang, and a Bandit Angel, since March 2015.)
You need to be more stealth than Ashley Madison , unless you want to do a whole lot of ' splainin'.
2500 and 1300 hundred , doesn't sound as steep if you say it included clean up crew ,salt and new bulbs.

If I have a bigger tank maybe around $100. Those Tangs and Angels are nice.
Wish there are pics for those who replied on this thread.

Oh yeah. I think the best meme I saw for this hobby said "my biggest fear is that when I die, my wife will sell my corals and fish for what I said I paid for them"

It looks like a convict tang, they just must put a higher price on it because come from Mauritius like the gem tang. Maybe I am wrong.

They typically sell as Zebra Tang or Mauritius Convict Tang. Has a separate scientific designation, polyzona versus triostegus, though. Looks quite different to me.

For me, $300 (give or take $20) is my wheelhouse
thats about right for me, the thing that holds me back is the little voice in my head telling me I'm nutz for pay any more, ohh wait thats my wife... nevermind:p

My wife says no fish should cost more than 25 cents. I've tried to explain the distribution and economics of collection and delivery and what not, supply and demand, and relative beauty to her "goldfish" benchmark but it falls on deaf ears.

She's permitted me (been present) when I've spent up to $100 on a fish at an LFS so she's not entirely truthful with her comment!

I would have to say probably $100, I have yet to see a really expensive fish that I would kill to get.

My cutoff is more based on my belief that most fish really are not worth hundreds of dollars or they are but they are difficult to keep and I'm not taking the chance on having to flush hundreds down the toilet if it does not make it.

My exception will be a Scribbled Angel, as I feel it really is a spectacular looking fish. I'd probably make the exception for a Red Sea Sohal Tang if they weren't known for getting aggressive when larger. Fish like Black Tangs, Gems, etc are nice, just not spectacular enough for the asking prices. That's just me though. :)

I'm cheap with corals. I like watching frags grow. I'm not sure about a limit, but I think the most I've spent was $40 so far.

My limit is between $50 and $75. For both fish and coral. My way of dealing with the wifey is to find at least 3 and have pick her favorite.

But that is 3 for each item I want. I also use a healthy dose of, "well they (you guys) say..." And since you experts say it she grudgingly accepts it.

I tried that, she ended up what a new nano tank and I had to foot the bill, now she want's to get rid of it because "she doesn't have time" and I'm left doing all the work...:p
