I've been wanting to try a maxima for a long time. My LFS had a bunch of them last weekend and I decided to take the plunge! Not sure why, but the clam makes me more nervous than any coral or fish 🤷‍♂️

Been a week to the day and it's going well so far!

THANK YOU for putting it in the rocks. Maximas are reef clams, and will appreciate the firm mounting rather than the sand.

Congratulations!!

Clams look soooo much better in person looking top down, I bet it's hard not to look at it often.

Stable placement and lighting are half the battle.

It looks beautiful.

Best of luck, maximas are my favorite!
Thanks me too! Was pretty excited when I saw it in the LFS!

Ya for sure! I’ve read about everything I could find so I was ready for the day I decided to take the leap. The spot I have it should be in the right PAR and flow sweet spot :) It seems to be attached so hopefully I got it right!

Congratulations!!

Thank a ton! Completely agree on the top down… the blue pops so much! A new adventure in the hobby for me.

If you don’t have a Lensport, or something similar, get one! Top down pics are so gorgeous!

Have any recommendations? It’s been on my radar but haven’t really researched any yet.
I just use a VCA Lensport and an orange clip on lense with my iPhone. Nothing else and they come out like that. That’s probably the cheapest vs doing something DIY.

Nice clam!
Looks like a crocea to me.

Has the elongated shell and the LFS owner bought them as maxima from ORA. But honestly if it were a crocea I still love it and they have similar requirements I believe (?).
Its 100% a maxima. The scutes on the side of the valve (shell) a good first indicator. Look at the inhalent siphon too. Croceas have tiny, almost non visible tentacles, whereas the maxima will have visible obvious ones. And, as a anecdotal point- having seen 1000s of tridacnid juveniles, that pattern on the mantle is telltale maxima.

Thanks a bunch for confirming! I felt pretty confident that it was a maxima, but I’m not really a clam expert (maybe someday).
