I'm trying to help swim decide on which reef controller to buy for her boyfriends tank, either the RK Elite or the Apex controller?

Can you please give me some guidance to pass along to her from those of you that are in the know about both controllers, which one is better? which ones gives better options? etc..

I really appreciate the feedback

Happy Reefing!!

I vote for the Apex due to the fact that it comes ready to hook up to the internet so you can monitor your tank via web or smartphone. With the Digital Aquatics controllers, you need to buy a seperate RKE-NET to connect to the internet. I found the directions for programming the DA controller was confusing for a controller noob and it was difficult to find help in that area outside of posting in their forum and waiting for a responce. The apex directions that came with the unit weren't that much help either, but the "Unofficial Apex user guide" was a huge help and can be found for free on google. And the final reason I vote for the Apex is because my customer service experience with DA was horrible, while Neptune was helpful when I contacted them.

FWIW, I've been using Apex since they were released (2 units home and office tanks.) They have served me very well. The Web functionality is great.

Agreed the web functionality and smart phone controls would give the edge to Apex. If you dont use those features then its a toss up because i have heard good things about the RKLs.

I have an RKE and like it. I'm not really going to use it for any smart phone apps so no real need for internet connection. I also have a RKL for my frag tank. It's more than enough for what I need for that tank (lights, heaters, fans)

Apex all the way. I have everything I need for net and DIY led or cramping pumps.... with rke. I would have to buy it all seperate that's an extra 250. I spent 450 flat. Love my apex. Aldo the fact I can change my light or shut off equipment in a different state when needed.

Sent from my EVO.
