Interesting, I don’t have much Marco rocks in the tank, it helps build up a colony of bacteria and I like to seed the biospheres for when I qt my fish and corals. I do the TTM and prazi pro + metro/focus soaked pellets over a period of 1-2 months.

But I did add a **** ton of biospheres to seed so I can use them when I qt more livestock. So they won’t permanently live there forever.

I only added 20 pounds of sand and it’s a very minimal aquascape. So in this case is it okay to have a lot of biospheres?

I'm not an expert in QT'ing, but because I use a medicated, copper based QT, I like to use plastic bio media. I always suggest keeping some plastic bio media running in most reefer's display tanks for when they may need to get a hospital tank up and running on the fly. I say "plastic" media because it's inert, and doesn't interact with the copper medications like rock, sand, and at least some ceramics can do.

I know there's a lot of paradigms out there for QT, but I follow the R2R approved QT protocol found at this link. I always suggest this because the expert(s) that wrote and maintain this thread are right here on R2R if you need help. I know that Jay H. recently updated this protocol with some options to shorten the otherwise lengthy QT time frame, though shortening it is not without risk:

Thank you for sharing! I’ve messaged humble fish and he’s helped me a lot with my QT protocol. I’ll definitely check this out.

I haven’t used copper yet and have only noticed an internal parasite so far using prazi and metro. But what I usually do is replace the biospheres anyway especially after I treat with prazi and do a large water change or swap tanks/water at the same time.

Humble Fish is a certainly leader in fish QT, and many R2R members follow his advice. Some have even migrated to his forum

But, the protocol I linked above was authored by a man who ran large public aquaria professionally. He was charged with adding fish to enormous and established displays where if the new fish brought in a disease, an entire large public aquarium display could be wiped out at the cost of thousands of dollars, not to mention the loss of life, and the disappointed children that would visit the aquarium the next morning
