So question for everyone, do you think corals grow faster in higher alk? My hammers grow slow as mud. My gonis are crazy though.

Higher alk provides extra carbonate for skeletal growth through calcification if im not mistaken. Usually higher alk is where you see burnt acro tips because the tissue isn't keeping up with the skeletal growth. There are ways to avoid it with nutrients/lighting but that's the gist

Hard to say. I've had my tank at low alk (6 dkh) up until recently and haven't had any issues with my lps and softies growing

Do you think this applies to non acros?

Could be way off but i read that if you run higher ALK, then you can run higher nutrients which offsets the adverse effects of running higher ALK? And by running higher nutrients it makes it easier to keep a mixed reef?

Oh as a non acro keeper I won’t argue with that. I think we’ve all read the same stuff on that. In my primitive brain there are acros and then everything else lol. I’ve chosen the easy path. It just seemed a lot of that literature was around acros and it’s more curiosity on what burnt tips would look like on a trachy, torch, etc. I can probably grab a photo of a birdsnest I have that might classify in the burnt tip category? So is it just sps? I don’t run high alk 7.5-8.0. Nitrates are usually around 5ppm. PO4 around 0.1-0.15.

i'm curious myself as i like the idea of a mixed reef but i have noticed that when i keep ALK around 8 that the torches, hammers, etc dont look as happy.
When i run it closer to 9 the torches look better but by trying to raise the nutrients it seems the colors on the acros arent as vibrant.
I have not noticed a burnt tip so to speak on the LPS but when they are unhappy they dont seem to extend as much.

Lps usually appreciates some higher nutrient water

Yep. Not even sure what it would look like. It might just be a non issue since LPS generally grow slower than SPS

Have seen this as well. I guess I wouldn’t put my water in the higher nutrient category. Those PO4 numbers I gave, take with a huge grain of salt. I’ve tested at 0.13 and ICP came back at 0.02. Started feeding a ton more and got my Hanna all the way up to 0.3. ICP game back at 0.22. In June, I tested at 0.19 and ICP came back at 0.07. So consistently lower and I’m not sure what’s going on with the Hanna or my method but that’s not important here. I don’t directly feed any of my coral. They get what they get from left over food or fish waste. So I have no clue how I can get away with lower nutrient water🤷
