Had to take out my sand sifter star. Started with the legs but today a huge chunk missing from the center. Stock: rabbit fish, 2 clowns, 3 fire fish, 1 scopas tang, 2 blue green crom. Hand full of small hermits, assorted snails, and 2 mia emerald crabs 2 shrimp.

Any thoughts?

My guess would be that your sand sifting star is starving. I have seen them waste away like that before in the past when they don't get enough food/nourishment. A big reason why I choose not to keep them anymore.

I concur, when they waste away it looks like something is feeding on them. Starfish if you're lucky will last a year or more but it's usually under a year. Had one that lasted 11 months then just just disappeared, that was my first and last one. Starfish are best left in the ocean.
