Why aren't stags more popular?

I too love stags and have an island that will have a few, and the other island will not have any. I think that they make for a more natural looking mixed sps reef. I will have to check out those Battle Corals Stags. I'm sure I've seen them I've looked at his site a million times as I plan my tank.

Beautiful reef. Some of my favorite staghorns are blue tip slimer (a.yongei) and a juicy blue hoki (a.hoeksemai ). Stags are a great way to give a reef scape that fulfilling look.

I just bought a ORA blue voodoo today and it looks awesome. I want a bali green slimer really bad, had one like 10 years ago and it was my favorite coral. If you ever look at those tank of the month or similar type threads/ pages. All of those tanks have some epic stags jutting out of the rockscapes it seems like, they really just add something awesome to a tank. Some acros are incredible up close but from afar they are just whatever, but a 12'' stag that is neon green or deep royal blue is a sight to see.

Just picked up a ora stuber frag at the local pet store for free. One of their customers broke down their tank and gave them a football size colony they had no room for it so I got a freebie.

I think stags are popular, not the most popular, but I see a lot of them and many love their stags. I think they look great - it helps if you have a ton of flow so they get nice and thick. The worst looking ones I have seen imo are in lower flow tanks and they are very thin and long. I love a reef with SPS and a mighty stag as the focal point!

Well said! Bruce who won tank of the month lives near me and he has a purple slimer that is soooo thick it's gorgeous! It might be 3"+ thick at the base branch. He cut me one branch which was over 1" thick.
Flow and light defiantly need to be high to make a stag look great. A long skinny stag with few branches doesn't do it for me. A nice abrotranoides or abrohlnosensis (spelling may be wrong there) is a nice choice but abros are a tough one to get going with good color.

Hey hinovak, what stags are you talking about from Aussie? I got one blue tip slimer from there but it turned all green like the maricultures do.

For me, they just grow so fast and take over the tank. While the tank in the reefbuilders article is nice, just not my style with all the the homogenous branching of stags covering the whole upper portion of the tank. I do like some interspersed here and there for vertical presence.
