Why blame it on your skimmer.

My skimmer has been the one biggest pain since I started my tank. I am currently on my longest period of not having to adjust it, about 2 weeks.when its good its real good, but when its bad its real bad. Kinda got a love hate relationship going on with that beast!

I think many of the skimmer issues go back to improper break-in and fine tuning, due to impatience. I was guilty myself with my first skimmer. Once I figured out how to dial the skimmer in, the stability and consistency was dramatically different.

I would never run a skimmer without attaching a tube to the cup and allowing it to run into a bucket. I have a 5 gallon bucket under my DIY HOB skimmer. I even have a shut off switch in the bucket in the case of it filling, as it did once when 25 urchingsspawned at the same time.

(don't make fun of my phone)

If your skimmer causes a flood it's your fault. All skimmers can and will occasionally overflow. We have to account for that. Some are definitely more efficient and easier to tune.

I don't use the drain on my collection cup if it over produces when I'm not around I want it to go back in the sump to prevent emptying my top of reservoir. If your tank can't handle a day of no skimmate production you have more problems than the skimmer. :D
