A macro lens usually makes sharper pictures corner to corner. If you look at the picture in 100% view a macro taken with a macro lens will usually be sharper than the one taken with a normal zoom lens. Especially the corners usually are the weak points of zoom and wide opening lenses (1.4 or 1.8). This statement is not limited to macros, macro lenses will be of the sharpest lenses even for landscapes and here you may even notice the sharpness corner to corner in comparison to a zoom lens. So why is not every lens a sharp macro lens? Because macro lenses have a fixed moderate focal length and a moderate opening, other lenses have wider opening, longer or shorter focal length or a variable focal length.
