A simple question can have simple answers. Upon beginning my journey into this insanely amazing thing called Reef Keeping, I wandered the Tripple W's for knowledge. I was referred by a number of people to a place I wont name, But they think they are the Center of the world of reefs, hence there name...of which I do not speak. The website seemed appropriately popular and I figured it was full of good stuff, which it was...but to find this stuff you had to have alot of time on your hands.

A simple question: Are 4x65w PC Bulbs more intense than 4x54w t5s? Ok...How hard is that??? There are 2 ways to figure this one out. First off, the bulbs need common reflectors (or none at all), color, etc,. Test the Par Reading on the sand bed for both bulbs, and voila! There is your answer.

The answers the poor person who asked the question on the site got: Pure opinions based on uncontrolled environments and bickering at each other. One guy offered to do the test with his own bulbs if a local had a PAR meter to borrow, but than changed his mind and "Put it [the responsibility] on another guy," because he was mad about his post that was merely asking, "If pc reflectors put out 75% of 65w and t5 reflector X put out 85% of 54W how can t5s be Brighter???

To me, those places with the so called "Tank Geniuses" can have their wizzing contests to themselves. A simple question, Even with variable answers CAN be answered simply.

What I like about R2R is that when I ask a question, even a more complex one....I get answers based on facts. Opinions are very important too, and the members here are a lot less prone to letting their egos take over.
Not everyone is born with knowledge on EVERYTHING, let alone bulb types and electrical...its enough learning about calcium your first time for most!!

The point of a Community is to pass knowledge and communicate freely and with respect. Reef 2 Reef has proven themselves (both Modulators and Membranes) as a great place for even the dumbest of people (cuz there aint no stupid questions) to get what they need without the hassle of Mr Know-It-All tainting the waters.

I personally appreciate this a lot and Refer Reefers to this site when ever I meet a new one.

Thanks R2R and all the other members!!!!

I couldn't agree more. There are some wacky people that are sticking to those other forums... Until they get kicked out for their opinion.

I was one of the kicked lol. All i was trying to do was design a multi environment system and they got irate about things my msgt dad would not think twice about...like humidty..how can humidity anger someone...an exhaust fan would have been a better suggestion than booting me at minimum. In fact, i am rewriting the entire plan out that i presented on this site to get some reactions. Another forum for that though lol.

What also gets me is that they often blame any profanity aimed towards you as your own fault for "askin for it." Its been a long time since then, and i dont think ive missed a thing.

Googling stuff, they are a frequent, but often the diy and actual knowledge are on links to places like this where people are actually helping lol...

It's all about respect, as you eloquently stated in your original post. Statistically, a box of apples will have a few bad apples. The more boxes, in one location, the more bad apples present. Unfortunately, when you're the largest apple warehouse in existence, you'll have a larger percentage of bad apples than smaller warehouses. Reef2Reef's warehouse has much more respectful and friendly "apples."

Along the theme of respect, one of our requirements is that our respectful and friendly membership doesn't bash other apple warehouses, so, while this thread continues, let's all please keep that in mind.

I got kicked off too. Mine was for discussing my autistic son. Can you believe that. I posted that my autistic son really liked looking at a certain persons tank. They pm'ed me and said that wasn't appropriate. I guess me telling them where to stick it didn't help. Then the guy that I said my son liked, got kicked out a month later. Haha.

that unmentioned site was the first one i joined upon googling a few things i had questions about led me here i have not went back since

I couldn't agree more! I came from the same site and actually have read your build. That place was aweful and all the traffic was in the OT. section. The best part to me is how family friendly this site is. Avatars are for the most part (minus a couple IMO) good and clean. Words are used how they were meant to be (to share info and not sling slander) and above all the people here are uncommonly friendly! I love it here!!!

I'm here because all my google questions led me here. And couldn't be happier. This is college of forums. We all are respectful and just want to have a great tank. And that's what I get. Do onto others...

Lol, The Earth Tank I called it i think. I admit that It was ridiculously ahead of its time technologically. MY avatar on there was just me wearing a spongebob blanket. He lives in the ocean...couldnt have been more relevant right?

R2R's New mission statement: HOW DO YOU LIKE OUR APPLES?

I like the recent threads section on the forums page here. If I want to read complaints about coral names and pricing I may go there but i will never log on in fears of getting banned. heard many have dissappeared like the mafia over there

There is an anti (anonymous website) called ...something or other...sucks...I went there and posted my ban story lol. another good place, although dedicated to dissing them...if thats your forte haha. If people do want to dis anyother sites that would be the place to do it.

I also was "moved on" from the other site LOL , its a great site but its just too big,I just don't think they look at us as people, just names and avatars. I had the pleasure to move together with Troyle :) the following photos are from the move LOL. yft.jpg yfb.jpg

Hahaha awesome!

A friend of mine from a local forum brought me here, I was hooked in MOMENTS! This is and always will be my reef forum home.

My local club site is my "home" but I come here when I finish checking what is going on there. A fellow member suggested I try R2R and I've been very pleased. I agree with others who have commented on the kindness of the people here (led by Rev's example) and their willingness to help by sharing their experience in a positive manner rather than taking an attitude that they know everything and their way is the only way. People who have been reefing for even a short time know that there are many ways to succeed (and fail) and I appreciate people who say "I was successful doing XYZ because that worked for my tank with my conditions and it may work for you but other ways may work better for you with your conditions".

The people that want to argue, flame and put down others to prove how smart they are don't hang around here because of the people. It is not up to the mods here to police rude people and ban them when they get out of hand. I feel that the kind attitude of the members here drives the bad people away before the mods ever need to get involved. If I came here to argue and be obnoxious the respectful members here would either not respond or immediately put me in my place and let me know that we don't act that way on this site. Since no one will fight with them, they move on to other forums to get what they want which is to win an argument.

I am a member of many sites and most of them are small and specific that I rarely go to when I need the limited information they provide that no one else can. I also have membership with large sites that allow bad behavior and ban those who defend themselves when flamed. In my opinion they allow the rudeness because some members like to read the fights. The ones starting the trouble are protected by banning those who disagree. I avoid this atmosphere by ignoring the posts and not replying when I am flamed. I still use these sites because there are many good people there that have experience not found on other sites. I come to my local club and R2R first but sometimes there are questions that can only be answered by a few individuals that have that specific experience found in the larger pool of reefers that frequent the huge sites. I ignore the bad and use the experience of the good people on those sites that can help me.

lol, nice ostrich!
And now a fictional 'memo' sent by the ceo of the also fictional website EgoReef.clam

Dear fellow moderators
In efforts to gain more respect and members i have devised a plan for attack. Our supporters have been losing business since the D.I.Y. forum has been added. This is where we will start finding the "rebels." When you locate one, you will need to alert all of us of their presence. Each of us will then be responsible for going to the public library to log in under our undercover accounts and insult these people with vulgarity and get them rowled up.

Once we are confident there is enough profanity, we will then blame them for 'asking for it.' Profanity is suitable means to permanantly ban these anarchic thinkers. Remember team, we strive for uniformity, hype, and most importantly, our egos. Have a facist day and remember, less wattage with the words high output makes more money.

I've moved to this site after starting on another that I was a bit more specific to my tank needs, everyone there was super helpful with my setup and there is a lot of useful information, however, the total lack of moderation started to irk me. I did a ton of reading before I even purchased my setup and didn't have many noob questions, but the people who post there and do are often met with unnecessarily harsh criticism. I try to keep a low profile, but I checked in often and there's this one guy who continuously posts only degrading, inflammatory BS, and the rudeness is hard for me to read. I like the positive attitude here. Plus, every time I google something recently, the answers has been found here. So either the SEO is amazing, or this is a really comprehensive site. Either way, I'm glad to be here.

I was hooked in MOMENTS! This is and always will be my reef forum home.

Very true. While I was not referred by anyone, I stick around here because of the kindness with which members respond and offer advice. As stated by may others in this thread, the information here is fantastic and the people providing it seem equally so.
