Starting to set everything up and fill the tank. Still waiting on the protein skimmer and lights. But they aren't really needed for cycling. Since I'm a pc builder I will be doing some wire management once she is done.

Congrats on getting it started! She is gonna have a blast.

Edit: i think its looking good. Two wave makers should give better variable random flow than what I’m working with. i don’t have experience with canister filter but I know people have success with them with consistent maintenance. I like the sand depth especially if she wants a sand sleeping wrasse.

Water is in and cycling has begun. The light is a temp light so we could see if it had cleared up. She plans to add a few more islands around the bottom.

So, i knew this would come up lol. Almost all filter pads have been removed. only the course pads remained. All the trays have been filled with bio media. The main idea behind using the canister is to be able to add polishing pads and carbon if and when it is needed.

One more piece came today. The Tunze Comline 9004 DC protein skimmer. She always added a few dry live rock donuts. Her cycling is starting to come along.

So with the Tunze 9004. I have some tips based one my experience… of my inexperience with the product. Make sure to use the magnet extenders with a rimmed tank. Why I didn’t start out with them is beyond me. When i realized something wasn’t right I grabbed the box and low and behold the extenders were right there.

Also use the bar piece that transforms the skimmer into a true surface skimmer. When I first installed I had misread and thought there was a complex reversal of the pump parts to make it surface skim. Theres not. Just install the one piece that snaps in.

There is a breakn period and you may have to slightly adjust the skimmer height and pump percentage to get it right but further down the road this thing will get some nice skimmate.
