I bought a Care Magnet Strong when BRS recently had a sale but had to return it because the glass thickness specs just don't work as advertised. No way you should rate that up to 3/4" (check all the other forum posts). I need to order a Strong+, but the sale had ended and $120 is just a crazy price for what that is.

Is there a Memorial Day sale coming?

Sales are really up to dealers. We rate magnets based on what they will work on, this assumes proper use, you move at a steady pace and in the correct direction. They will detach if you move fast or go against the direction of travel. Going up one size prevents detachment but the Strong will definitely work on 3/4 when used correctly and going oversize does increase blade wear, going way oversize is likely to break the blade mounts. The price is on par with any competing magnet for 1" glass, I think people do not realize that to hold on glass 1" thick requires magnets that can lift a few hundred pounds and there are 8 of them in a Strong+, it takes exponentially stronger magnets for each 1/4" in glass thickness.

I’ve been using the AlgaeFree magnet for years and it became clear to me after about 30 seconds of use that the care magnet strong isn’t as strong as the other product with the same thickness rating. Implying user error is just a dumb statement. It’s sounds like you’re saying if I get the stronger magnet I’m going to have the other problem people complain about with the blade holder not being strong enough? Guess it wasn’t meant to be.

The Care Magnets work in a unique way with a gap left between magnet and glass to reduce the risk of scratches, this does mean some strength is lost to this gap. Our office tank uses 3/4" glass, the strong works perfectly fine on 3/4" glass, but you have to move forward and back smoothly, no jerking movements, no shifting down, to move down or up you move in a forward arc. I do use a Strong+ as it reduces the chances of disconnecting, especially jumping corners, but a strong will work and the price difference is trivial. The blade mounts only break when you go grossly oversized, the main place we see this happen is maintenance guys who buy a Strong+ and use it on every tank they work on, on 1/4-1/2" that is a tremendous amount of pressure on the blade mounts, keep in mind the blades are all that touches the glass, all the pressure is on a small area to put all the force into cleaning.

You do realize that the current equivalent Algae Free is presently more expensive than even the Strong+?
