I've been considering installing a wind turbine to help buffer the cost of my reef8ng hobbit. Was curious on what people thought and what there experience with them have been. Now for the area I live in we have a steady wind of about 5-10 MPh and days that run 20-40 with gust up to 80mph. Any suggestions would be great.
@twilliard with your work in Alaska thought you might have some input.
 
Where do you live? The first thing you need to do is check your local zoning laws.
 
I live in the country with very limited zoning laws in New Mexico.

I have actually built and ran one. I do have to tell you though they are HIGH maintenance.
You have many choices depending on your needs. In the county where I live I have a height restriction of 50 feet due to living near a local airport.
 
In New Mexico I would go with Solar. I installed it on my house 8 years ago and even here in New York it is saving me $110.00 a month. Where you live would be much better.
 
I have had the wind here destroy panels there's always debri flying.
 
And yes I wouldn't mind solar as there's hardly any cloud cover.
 
I'm still looking into my options the only issue on solar I have is the cost I'm looking at lease prices now.
 
The only thing with wind turbines is that they are constantly rotating, therefore constant wear and tear.

If you look into solar, check first if your utility allows net metering. The way it is metered can have a huge outcome on its ROI.
 
One of the problems I'm having the electric company here well atleast there meter reader never gets the actual reading ju us to guesses at it you can barely see my meter but they refuse to replace.
 
If you go with solar, they will have to replace your meter because the panels feed back into the grid and your old meter won't allow it to do that.
 
That would be nice if just have to come up with enough to have it done going with solar I have to bring other parts of the house up to code as well.
 
There is no ROI on solar. Solar city (et all) is a ripoff as well no matter what plan you use. Wind is great if consistent. But for any system, startup and maintenance costs will eat any savings. No ROI on any of them. Alternative energy is great if you are off the grid or want to be off the grid but if your only reason is cost savings, don't do it.

BTW: It does not matter if it is cloudy or not, modern solar panels work the same even with cloud cover.
 
@ReeferBob Yea that's kind of the conclusion I'm coming to in the state of NM of you try to pull off grid from what I'm finding they are condemning house for it.
 
My 22 solar panels save me $1,500.00 a year. I bought the panels and installed them myself. With the rebates and taxes I got back, they paid for themselves in les than 2 years.

Respectfully; I disagree. At least; I disagree that ALL solar is not cost effective. I've got a self-installed system on my roof that will pay for itself in 5 years, yet has an expected life of 20. Even if the ROI estimates are off by 2x, the system will still be a net-profit over it's life.
I DO agree that mass-market solar companies do not produce as cost-effective a system as you can build yourself. The labor costs they charge (for job planning, install, and on-going support) eat into the profit margins of the homeowner. They also limit the system size that they will install (often to no more than 15% above current average need or the like). This limit makes it so that you can't easily install a system (through them) that is as profitable as it otherwise could be. They also use a "one size fits all" material list and a generic blueprint. This is easier for them to turn installs, but does not generally result in the best outcome for the home owner.

BTW: It does not matter if it is cloudy or not, modern solar panels work the same even with cloud cover.
Sorry; not true. Not assuming the panels are not maxed out under cloud cover. Assuming your panels and setup can handle the energy full sun can provide, then any cloud cover will reduce the output of the system. Here, for example, is the relative monthly output of my system as we passed from Summer into Winter:

Nothing has changed in the system during that time; it's all weather-related.

Every city and building inspector is different, but generally you only have to have things to-code that are involved in the upgrade. In the case of solar, that's going to be the mounting surface (eg; your roof; but it you have the space, there's the option of putting them on their own mountings) and your power main. Plus anything you install, of course, must be to-code. The building codes for solar are actually rather generous and not hard to meet.

I can't say how solar and wind would compare; I never looked into installing wind. But unless you have near-constant winds that are high enough to spin a turbine, I doubt that wind would be as cost effective. As I understand it; wind turbines require constant wind, as well - gusts don't work as well. Again; I've not looked into it, so all that is guess and conjecture.

A lot depends on subsidies which are drying up. When I looked there was no ROI the system cost was around $40k with $20k of subsidies. They would produce around $100/month in power. The panels lose efficiency (2%/year?) so that goes down as they age. Without including that it's close to 17 years ROI. With a "theoretical" lifespan of 20 years. I consider this no ROI since I expect during that time I would need at least 1 repair. This also doesn't calculate the cost of money. $100/month is generous as well. Home power usage is least during the day when the panels are at maximum efficiency. Even with selling back to the grid, your night usage would eat into some of the cost savings. Not to mention weather events like rain and snow on the panels. And dirty panels.

Also you posted a graph of the seasons which isn't valid for a sun vs cloud comparison. Angle of sun is a different thing so yes time of year makes a difference in solar collection. I was under the impression that modern (PV) panels collect solar radiation (visible/UV/IR) that is not reduced much due to cloud cover. I could be wrong on that though.

One more thing with Solar - an unintended consequence. There will come a point when your conventional power bill will start to go up. Power plants do not produce variable power (for practical purposes). If they cannot sell the power, it is wasted. Power plants need to sell power to remain in business. If solar gets enough adoption, they will have to increase fees and possibly will also get the mandate to buy your excess power reversed.

This is the crux of it, I suppose. My system produces far more power than $100/month, and it cost me around $20k net to install. But that's me and my home. Every house has a different amount of space available that can support solar panels to a differing degree. For some, the numbers make sense. For others, they do not.

All true, of course. I, myself, work from home - so my day-time power use is a significant factor. Where I'm at, there is no snow and (unfortunately) infrequent rains over the course of the year. In terms of day/night, the OP did mention that they are looking to offset the cost of the power used by their reefing; I'm not sure if that means that they are looking to offset just the cost of the reef gear, or if they are looking for everything in the house. If just the reef gear, you could "oversize" the system to cover the night-time use, perhaps (sort of an in-home buy-back).
Just as a note on numbers; my last "true up" bill (which I pay at the end of the year to cover all the energy I used that I didn't produce) was $220 (for 6 months of use). That's less than my average bill for a single month was before the solar was installed. But - again - that's me; every system is different.

Yes; true - the sun angle changes. I should have posted a graph of the daily fluctuations, but wanted to give a bigger picture. Suffice to say; there is daily variation as well. My panels are some of the newest on the market; I would love to find out that there are panels out there that are cost effective and aren't impacted by clouds and such, but I did not find them in my searches. The best I could do (which I did) was to get "micro inverters" so that each panel could maximize it's own draw (as opposed to "standard" systems where all panels in a string get reduced to the lowest producer's level).

My cost of solar is $10/month. You are correct that this could go up. But then, so could - will - the cost of energy itself; it always has. I'll take my chances that the fee I pay will go up slower than the cost of power.
Along with the rising costs of power, however, are the falling costs of solar - and of power storage. I planned on getting a Tesla Powerwall 1.0, but they sold out. I'm in-line to get a 2.0, which should help solve the non-producing times - and provide me with a whole-house backup in the case of a power-outage - which will be a huge relief now that I've got the tank in the house. :-)

Tesla is coming out with solar roof shingles.
FYI: These will still be a luxury item in terms of cost effectiveness. The market for them is for those who want solar, but don't want the "unsightly" panels on their roof. As with most things, you pay more for it to look good. ;-)
