Could it be useful for catching fish?

A good way to catch a fish is a couple of hours after the lights go out - if you know where the fish sleeps. The fish will be "out of it".

my fish sleep in rocks so I dont think the sleep trick would ever work for me if it ever came down to it

I don't think that trap will work for you, but who knows I have a 4" tang that hides pretty darn good in some tight spots.

Take a plastic bottle (gatorade, water, 2 liter) cut the top off and invert it back into the bottle. Poke some holes in it and put your wrasse's favorite food in it.
