would you spend $500 on a ozone generator or $500 on a filter floss roller for water clarity?

Just make sure you understand setup of an ozone system. Your skimmer and tubing needs to be ozone resilient so it doesn’t break down. Also need carbon bed on skimmer to absorb any ozone that may leak out. Ozone can be hazardous to your health if it is leaking into your air.

If it were me and my tank, and I had to choose one, I would opt for the ozone.

I don't use mechanical filtration, and if I did I wouldn't like the reoccurring cost of the roller replacements.

I use ozone, because I like the look of clear water. Hence my vote.

Ozone is the winner.

Here’s my tank with the bucket test.

Left: fresh Saltwater
Right: tank water

I didn’t use my ozone generator for about 1-2 months. I used BRS ROX 0.8 in media bag. Changed 2x/month. 100 micron filter socks changed 2x/week.

After one day of using ozone

left: RO/DI water
right: tank water

After second treatment of ozone during the same week.

Left: fresh saltwater
right: tank water after 2 days of ozone

I am thinking about getting an ozone generator with the air dryer and orp controller for $500... or would reef be better served with a RED SEA REEF MAT ROLLER FOR $429?
I’d go more for an ozone reactor like avast.

I have the reef mat and definitely the best roller out there if you go that route!! Happy reefing

I don't know anything about either one.
I use a sock sometimes but nothing most of the time and my water is so clear it hurts my eyes.
Guess my answer would be save the money for something else.
My 2 cents.
If you HAVE to spend the money, I'd say ozone all the way.
Reef mat, roller mat or whatever it is sounds like something that will break, but, like I said, I wouldn't know.

I made my own manual roller mat for $20 and see a big change in water clarity and quality over filter socks.

I've got a reefmat and would never go back to filter socks. Not having to change it out until a month or two is so worth the 17 bucks per roll, and I'm sure someone will make even cheaper generic fleece roll replacements eventually.
I just ordered an ozone generator, too. So why not get both if you can't decide? I think most decent generators go for $200-$300. I got the Enaly one.

I just changed the roll in my reefmat after being setup for 2 months. Idk how people deal with filter socks! Fleece roller is awesome! Sump and DT stay so clean.

I did mechanical filtration first, then UV, and then Ozone. Best bang for the buck til least. I even run carbon sometimes but new carbon jacks the ORP through the roof so you’ll have to turn off the UV then. Nothing better than super clear water.

All kinds of thought on these... I personally don'y use either. I use Pinky Filters, cut to size in my sump. One roll lasts me about 50 days. I change the pad out every third day and I have great water clarity.

I have a very heavy bio load and run both a ReefMat and ozone. Water is crystal clear.
The reefmat takes out the particles and the ozone keeps the water clear.

Anyone that says ozone isn't worth it for the water clarity has never run it. If they have, they need an eye exam.

You can not get the water clarity that ozone provides from anything else. BRS actually just released a short video on that this morning.

Ozone also has numerous other benefits besides water clarity. It kills odors from the tank and helps fight toxins from corals.

To answer the OP on another part, you very likely won't need an air dryer. Save your money there unless you know the unit will be sucking in 50% or higher humid air.

does running an air dryer without the air being that humid (<50% humidity) do anything long term, or even short term (bad readings, less effective, etc) to the ozone generator?

I think it makes it less effective and also coats the corona cell in a nitric acid which destroys the cell. I think it was called nitric or something like that.
