Wrasse Gender Switch?

I have noticed that my female leopard wrasse has been eating a LOT. More than usual. She is getting quite chubby actually. :xd:

Is this an early sign of switching gender? I would assume that it takes a lot of energy to switch.

I have had her for 8 months BTW.

Also curious, do wrasses get new scales of different color when they switch or do their current scales change color?

Not at all. Simply a sign that she's a pig. :) Typical of a healthy wrasse.

A lone female Macropharyngodon might remain female forever; there's no guarantee she'll ever transition.

That's a good question, and one I'm actually not sure of the answer. Logic would make me think they're new scales, but considering how fast a transition can happen (a week or less), I tend to think it might just be a color shift.
