Wrasse in QT

Did you ever get to trying copper?

I have not, I'm debating trying it next. have in some Epson salt now, that seemed to get him swimming and he is active now just seems to swim in circles and if I turn a power head on he just tumbles in the current.

Wrasses are easily panicked, and can be prone to spinal cord injuries - the swimming in circles and tumbling in the current brought it to mind.

I haven't had a Lubbock make it through QT and have tried two. I used cupramine and prazi on one and cupramine and general cure on the other and they both quit eating and died two weeks or there about in QT. May be a good candidate for TTM and maybe smaller general cure dose or?

I fattened mine up for a week in QT before I introduced prazi. He struggled as soon as I introduced prazi. After the first dose, he was fine during the second dose, but when I added the carbon to clear it out, he started acting up.

I've seen several fairy wrasse lately with with weird behavior like this and nothing overtly obvious that's wrong with them. I have yet to figure out what exactly to do about it. The spinal injury is possible of course, but it's odd that I would be seeing so many of those lately... in my own fish in QT at home, at the shop and online.

Wrasse often lay around, breathe heavily, and act lethargic with ammonia poisoning as well. Do either of you have the ammonia alert badge by Seachem?

I guess it is possible but not sure anyway to confirm? he seemed to swim fine the night I brought him home and the next day he just laid on his side and that's when I started the above link. I swear he is blind also as he just runs into things as well. I see him a lot floating upside down and I think he is dying again and then back to normal.

yep seachem badge in every tank I own I have also test the QT he is in about every 2-3 days, also have bio spira in there

I have one in my DT overflow that doesn't change because there are no traces of ammonia, in my QT if I see it changing slightly green I will normally test and do a water change but the bio spira seems to keep it in check

Lubbock wedge themselves in rocks in a mucous coucoon to sleep and they may be what he is doing jamming himself under pvc. That part I wouldn't worry about. I'm pulling for you guys, I really like the fish, wife picked ours out and named it hippie as it looked tie dyed. She was super bummed that it didn't make it. Second one I got was from a different area and had more linear pattern to colors.

I have an airstone running already, I did slow it down a little after I did the water change and started running carbon.

I never have done the freshwater dip to test for flukes, any info on that?

My LFS fresh water dips all their fish when they come in. They will lay on the bottom of dip and looks freaky but they will be fine.

I drip acclimate and let them go, I know risky but the stress sometimes of QT on wrasses might be worse, I use this stuff called Reef Keeper to boost the immune of the fish in my DT. My reef is going on 3 years

That may work fine for some wrasse but that practice will not work well with other types of fish without the thick slimecoat, ability to sleep in mucous cocoons or under the sand to avoid serious reinfection, etc.

He didn't make it through the night last night, lets hope my coral beauty makes it through this! The beauty seems fine, I have 10ml of copper in so far, out of 20ml. I'm doing 2 ml in the morning, and 2 ml in the evening until I get up to where it should be.

Ich, broken tank, and now my first fish in QT died!

I’ve had wrasse problems as well. I recently quarantined an Exquisite, Pintail, and Melanurus. All were feeding and like 3 days in, the Exquisite dropped dead. The Pintail started getting lethargic and stopped eating. This all started happening before I medicated. I started GC, and the Pintail got more and more lethargic and died. I got worried so started ramping up copper during the second round of GC, figuring I had nothing to lose and that I would probably lose the Melanurus. To my surprise, the Melanurus made it through quarantine well and is now in my display.

About a month later (about two weeks ago), I tried again with a Pintail and Exquisite. Again, both fed the first few days though the Exquisite ate more aggressively. After that, the Exquisite became lethargic and wouldn’t eat. I started GC and like the Pintail before, the Exquisite got more and more lethargic and died. However this time, the Pintail is doing fine and has progressively gotten more aggressive toward food and is even becoming a lot less reclusive.

What is odd is that the fish start out eating and then take a turn for the worse a few days in before I start medicating. It is also odd that something can attack and kill these fish so quickly, but it doesn’t kill them all or even cause them all to show symptoms.

This is a very sad story we are hearing a lot lately. Many of us have experienced the same things. The consensus is that the suppliers are treating fish with sub-therapeutic levels or copper and or other medications to keep fish looking good for shipment and sale. So you get one of these fish and the meds wear off after 3-5 days and the diseases the fish were exposed to come roaring back, almost without warning: velvet, flukes, ich, bacterial diseases, etc.

In my last two orders from a reputable online dealer I have had this same issue. I just lost an exquisite wrasse tonight and have a bluehead in the same state. I have had them for three days, got them both to eat butboth breath heavy and hide, they do not flash scratch or headshake. The exquisite was looking better this morning and ate so I started my GC treatment for parasites and that was it for him. We shall see how the rest do but this is my second order of wrasse and both ordered have lost fish with the same symptoms.
