Do sand dwelling wrasses die in the sand or in the open? I have one that did not eat for 2 weeks and has not surfaced for 3 days.

I’ve only had one sand sleeping wrasse die. Mine came out of the sand When he died but hid a lot in his final days. Good luck.

Most just never come back out and are reduced in the sand.

Typically, they actually come out of the sand before they die. Of course, a dead fish can be reduced to bones pretty quickly in an established tank, so you might still miss it.

I've found that they unbury, then die.

Interesting .... when I lose a leopard it’s almost always under the sand.
