Xanthid crab reproduction

I never learned about this specifically. Has anyone observed captive breeding of Xanthidae or any crab in captivity? I’ve just captured a second berried or gravid female with eggs. The rock and tank start date was essentially beginning Feb 2025. Is it a reasonable and likely assumption the one or two females have been using stored sperm?

Both crabs were caught long after (one just this morning) introducing the rock and rolling for a bit. So naturally, I thought each would be the last. I guess I’m just wondering can I assume they had stored sperm or are their actual reproductive molts going on and I still have a mac daddy pimp crab? Lol

Is it a unique chain of events? Or will happy & fed organisms breed as they are healthy like how some reefers end up with fish broods without trying.

Did you use live rock? Boy crabs have complicated reproduction.
It's a real possibility that you're still seeing younger crabs, but I imagine those sperms packets have got to run out eventually.
Seems like it would be impossible for the crab larve to make it to maturity.
Much stranger things have happened.
 
Thanks, I was almost thinking the same thing. I started with live rock and the rock must have been “good” because I lost track of my crab kills; if you count eggs I’m flush. They certainly holed up in them. The two berried females were roughly the same size (“small”) MAYBE about an inch point to point.

I always feel bad when I catch a egg bearing crab so all my coral-eaten-hate is deflated. So to your point, I had already thrown it in a barren, rock only, 5 gallon I’ve just left running for the same amount of time (No LR). I’m kinda curious if her eggs will fruit. It’s a crappy fluval evo so filtration is not crazy (hardly even filtered). All just to see if the extreme answer is ever possible.

WELL now I’m thinking I have to find evidence that I’m NOT mating Xanthids. I will stop saying “Oh finally found the last crab.” No major dosing, but I noticed the various crabs (sometimes hermits) happen to molt after a water change (which I did last night). And unfortunately, yes this is a molt. Welp, thought I had a reef tank but maybe I’m just a sport crab fisherman.

Will share in another thread the impressive claws on this pimp.
 
Female Xanthidae have seminal receptacles as true crabs so they can keep having viable eggs for awhile without a male.

Yea that’s what I was hoping but this male molt I just found is quite a specimen. And given they’d have to be pulling from their reserves from a long time ago; still under two years though. Idk, the tabloid headline is so much juicier if they’re reproducing ex situ

Ya that's a beast I probably should've read the whole thread before commenting 😅 my bad. After 4 months eggs become much less viable so I guess you'll be doing some more crab fishing.

I've observed Xanthid crab mating in captivity, and I've raised the offspring.

They can store sperm for quite some time (up to about a year) and they can have up to about 6 spawns from stored sperm. They can also store sperm from multiple males. The last male to copulate with them will be the father of the first brood laid.

If a male is present, he will begin to guard a female 1-2 weeks before she molts, and for up to about a week after.

I had no idea how long the sperm stayed viable and your post made me curious. The stored sperm has no DNA repair mechanisms so it degrades alot within the first couple months. That's from a study on a species of spider crab but it gives a good idea of how long stored sperm survives in crabs. Pretty interesting really.

Wow. Were you successful in raising them? Did you scope the zoea? Or did you just suddenly have a bunch of tiny crabs

I can't go into many details, but yes to all of that. It was a system dedicated to rearing them.
