My first attempt at a build thread was a mess. It was a remake of a tank that was already running. I did a poor job documenting things and I didn't keep up on the thread. I'll try harder this time.
Tank is a Redsea Reefer XL 300 G2
Lighting - Reef breeders Photon 32 V2 Pro with a Aquatic life 24 inch 4 bulb T5 Hybrid fixture as supplement for shadowing. May not really need the T5s but I had the fixture and wanted to get plenty of light to the SPS frags in the rear part of the tank.
Return pump - Jebao DCP - 5000
Filtration - Just using Redsea mesh socks. I never had the desire for a roller as I feel it just adds another component to fail. I'm a KISS kind of guy.
Skimmer - An old Reef Octo 110SS that I had laying in the basement.
Flow - 2 nero 5 on the back wall and an MP10 down low on the side to help prevent build up under the rocks
Heat - Inkbird wifi controller and two 300 watt titanium heaters.
Cooling - dual clip on fan
ATO - Stock Redsea as long as it does what it should. Swapped to a osmolator 3155 and a 10 gallon trigger ato
UV- Aqua UV advantage 2000

The tank

Beginning the rock scape. I used rock that I had laying around. Bonding was done with super glue, sand, and E-Marco 400 cement.

I wanted to go with a type of NSA scape and started here

Progressed to this

I didn't think there were enough places for fish to hide so I added some more rock around the bottom to create hiding spots and ended up here. I really struggle with rock scapes . I'm not a very creative person and tend to run out of patience before projects are finished . This is what I ended up with when I added water. I did tweak the scape a little bit later.

Pics of final lighting. The t5 hybrid fixture fit fine just laying on top of the photon.

I run a fuge on all of my systems. I always run chaeto. I run it for the purpose of providing a home to little critters more than nutrient export. I only harvest the chaeto when I absolutely have to. I rinse it but still always end up pulling out some little critters like micro brittle stars

and don't forget about the first aiptasia that appeared today :beaming-face-with-smiling-eyes: My CBB has proven to keep his previous DT clear of these little nasties so I'm not worried about them.

The marine pure blocks were from another tank that has been running for several years. I added a container of rock rubble and nasty muck full of cool pods and worms along with some sponges. Gotta love a good bristle worm.

20230226_222428.jpg

I have never used bottled bacteria before. I started this tank bare bottom with all dry rock and decided to try fritz turbo start 900 . I will say I was impressed and probably could have added a fish or two right away but held off. I'm pretty sure the muck and rubble I added along with the blocks are helping. I just use cheap work lights with led grow light bulbs in all of my sumps and the chaeto grows just fine. None of my chaeto tumbles either for anyone wondering. This is the finished sump shot today

Many of the coral I'm bringing over from other tanks. My goal is to have a mixed reef with LPS and a few softies down low.
First coral in space invader pectinia.

I wanted to keep an open look and not have a tank just jammed packed wall to wall coral (not that I can grow coral that well but a guy can hope) So I decided to go with staghorn frags and hope they branch as apposed to tabling acros. I ordered a battle box from Adam and received 8 nice chucky frags. Thanks @Battlecorals

I lost the blue clover to RTN but the rest are doing well so far.

So far the tank has been doing well. I really boosted my clean up crew this time. In the past I never really added enough even thought I thought I did. I added a bunch of different snails and hermits from John at reef cleaners. I'm guessing probably 100 or more counting the dwarf cerith snail. I had trochus as well but they kept climbing out and I got tired of taking them away from my dog so I started tossing the trochus in my basement sump that has a rim so they don't climb out. Note to self, trochus snails + rimless tank = dog toys. I also have a two tuxedo urchins and a few large turbo snails that I move around the tanks as needed

I've also started blowing the rocks off daily. I never really did this before (I can be lazy) but I think it really helps to not be over run with dynos and cyano. I had a what I think were dynos early but didn't get over run with them. I'm getting a few small patches of cyano that I just keep blowing off. I did start dosing reef snow and MB7 per the this article by SunnyX . Its too early to tell how well it works but it defiantly helps with water clarity. Fingers crossed I haven't had to deal with any nuisance algae yet. Come on clean up crew keep cleaning.

My parameters are staying pretty stable . My last test had Nitrates at 9.6, Phosphate at 0.1, and alk at 7.7. I dose 5ml of ESV 2 part daily but only the alkalinity. My calcium has been a little high at 480 without dosing, Mag was 1400 last time I checked. All of my talks require dosing alkalinity but not calcium or mag. I'm not sure why unless its the salt I use. I mix instant ocean and reef crystals at a 50/50 ratio. I have no real reason I use these salt mixes except they are always available and I stock up when they are on sale and most things look happy. I'm not a big fan of chasing numbers and complicating things with additives etc. I've been down that road and it just caused problems and frustration for me. I'm trying to pull from what I've learned through the years and make this reef tank successful but also simple. I'm retired so I have plenty of time. I do manual water changes of 2 gallons or so every day or 2. I'm not strict and sometimes stretch it out.

Dosing is done manually as well. ATO is the only automation I have besides lights and heat control. I thought about a controller like apex or similar but I just don't see the need in my situation. I don't travel and if I did I wouldn't want to know my tank is crashing while I'm away and helpless to prevent it. I have no one I could call to go fix things so it would just ruin our trip. That and I see too many post with people having problems with the high tech gear.

I'll keep this thread updated with images and hopefully not too many horror stories. I'm really hoping the mature media I added at start up will help with the ugly stages but only time will tell how that is going to play out. Frags are all mounted to the rock and knock on wood still doing good. Fish I have are a yellow tang, flame angel, copper band, and a sixline in QT for utilitarian purposes. I'm not really planning on adding more fish but who knows what the future may hold. This is tank number four that I have running so its not like I don't have plenty of things to focus on.

Well if you made it this far I would like to say thank you for taking time out of your day and sharing it with me. This is the tank today 87 days after adding water. I just fed so pardon the food floating in the water.

Looks great. Like the pectinia. Does that flame angel coral munch?
Thanks.
So far I have not seen the angel bother anything but it has only been in the tank for a month. I feed pretty heavily multiple times a day so hopefully I can keep it full. I have noticed my trachophylia has not been inflating fully the last couple of days but it tends to be moody but I'm keeping an eye on it.

Just an update. I pulled the stock ATO reservoir and added a tunze osmolator 3155 and a blemish Trigger systems 10 gallon reservoir. Thanks @Townes_Van_Camp for the heads up on the blemish reservoirs available. Still pricey but half of full retail price. The stock reservoir just made changing socks a royal PITA. I put the reservoir outside to save the room in the stand for odds and ends.
I also added a kamoer F1 doser for alk which is the only thing I dose at this point except the calcium carbonate and MB7 mentioned below.
I'm really not a huge fan of a lot of automation but at least this will allow me to stay away for a couple of days if needed. Setting the F1 up was kind of a pain and the app is clunky but after a few choice words and some mental enhancing beverages I got it working. I only have to dose 10ml right now.
20230526_162549.jpg

Yeah I can get to the reef diapers! I ran out of plugs and have another power strip on the way to mount on the panel.
20230526_171044.jpg

The tank itself is doing pretty well. I'm getting small patches of cyano that I'm blowing off the rocks daily along with dosing 5ml of calcium carbonate with 10 drops of microbactor 7 that @SunnyX discussed in one of his articles.
That is the path I have chosen so I'm going to follow this method for at least several more months. I'm learning a little as I mature and I think choosing a method and sticking with it long enough to know for sure its working or not is better than switching things up every few week. It's the old patience thing that is oh so important in this hobby and probably the hardest part, at least for me as I have never been accused of being a patient person.
I find it interesting how the cyano will appear on the immature rock and rocks with corals mounted that I brought over from a mature system grow zero cyano. Must be that good bacteria residing so bad bacteria can't bond thing I keep reading about ;)
On to the inhabitants

Honestly I didn’t love the scape when you showed it outside the tank, but now that I see it in the tank it looks really cool. Nice job!

Update day 109.
Things are doing well for the most part. Cyano is still trying to rear its ugly head. I'm still blowing the rocks off daily along with dosing 10ml reef snow and 20 drops of MB7. I did add a half dose of 4 scoops of chemiclean last night to assist. I try not to add a bunch of chems but I have used it in the past with no negative side effects. 3 of my 4 goni frags are not doing well but that's not surprising. I've never been able to keep goniopora but these were aqua cultured from a member here so I thought I might have better luck. I suppose 25% success (fingers crossed) is better than 0%.

20230609_140032.jpg

I rearranged a few things and brought a plate coral over from another tank where it wasn't happy. It immediately inflated and extended tentacle so I'm hopeful.

My staghorn frags are holding thier own and showing some new growth.

DAY 132
Well cyano is still hanging in there. Blowing rocks off daily. I'm not letting it get thick enough to vacuum. I've been adding the coral snow after I blow the rocks off. I'm getting a lot of cyano in the the socks so a lot is being removed but it just comes back. I started dosing 0.3ml of bacto balance daily on 6/20 more as an experiment than anything else. I have other tanks so why not play around a little with this one :thinking-face:
Tested today and phosphates are 0 and nitrates 0 via Hanna ULR phosphates and HR Nitrate. My last test was 6/22 and nitrates were 5.3 and phosphates 0.10. I'm not digging zeros so I'm stopping the bacto balance. I know I didn't try it very long but to be honest double zeros scare me. I dosed 10ml of acro power and a few scoops of reef roids today. I'll test in morning and if trates and phos are still at 0 I'll go ahead and start dosing both. That's it for know.
Cyano after being blown off 24 hrs ago. I even blow my snails off daily :face-with-tears-of-joy:

FTS from today. Getting a little growth on some frags but nothing to brag about.

Great looking tank - I love the aquascape, too! I was in your camp - wishing that these frags would take off. Now that I'm packed with SPS, I wish that they'll stop growing - lol

Keep up the great work and enjoy the journey!

Sorry for the late reply. Somehow I must have switched this back to my original build thread from my reefer 170.
Anyhow I have a shot from today below.
The frags are really starting to lay down a lot of base. At least to me its a lot. I'm easy to please. Stay alive and I'm a happy guy. Grow and I'm a really happy guy. I've changed some things around a bit. Added a few frags and have some on racks. Things are looking good and I have really had no large amounts nuisance algae.

I decided to automate a little and added a Reefmat 500. Really digging it and take back all the negative things I've said about fleece rollers in the past. I really like the reefbeat app. I have nine apps for stuff on the tanks and I'm rating this one way toward the top. I could see getting all Redsea lovey dovey if I were just starting out. So why not add a doser right? Reefdose 2 up and running for alk and cal. LOVE it!! I take back more negative things that I've said about dosers. It was super easy to set up. Hopefully things will go well in the future.

I upped the flow a bit also. I've read that SPS like a lot of chaotic strong flow. Since this tank is geared toward SPS I figured give it a try and see. Some stuff was repurposed. I didn't just run out and buy all these new. Just saying :winking-face:. I have two MP40s two 3rds or so up on the back wall, 2 Nero 5s down low on the back walls, and two MP10s down low on the ends toward the back blowing on the rocks mostly. I don't have them cranked way up, highest is 40%. I have all of the vortechs mirroring each other and the Neros on pulse. Things blow around pretty good when I feed. I'm surprised my Acanthophylia likes it so well.
Speaking of Acanthophylia, interesting bit of info that I learned last night. Acanthophylia have Mesenterial filaments, or at least what look like Mesenterial filaments. Last night I slid a frag rack down that had some acro frags on it and it was touching the Acan. The Acan deflated and had these slimy stringy filaments coming out from its underside. Some even looked like they were coming out of the skeleton. When I fist saw it deflated and looking the way it did I was like what the heck, is my Acan dying now, it looked that bad. Then I remembered seeing a lobo do this once and went aha. Moved the frag rack and the acan went back to what you see below within a couple of hours.
Well if You've read this far thank you.

Sorry not the greatest of shots.
