I have not been syphoning the sandbed, simply stirring it once a week. I now have some algae on the sandbed. Do yall syphon the sandbed? Does that waste alot of sand?

If you have a very fine grain it can be difficult to siphon the tank. If your grain size is more coarse you can use a gravel siphon from Walmart. I try to siphon at least every other water change simply because of algae problems. Id say with enough of a CUC the algae may stay away. Siphoning has worked for me.

Or sea cucumbers (the sand sifting type). Os a serpent star or two.
+1 with what Corey said. I never vacuum, I never stir, the critters do it for me and the sand looks fine.

How deep is the sandbed? I think a shallow SB should be regularly siphoned.
