Hey everyone, battling dinos right now, bought a microscope to get some better and larger images, i figured these images/videos could maybe be useful for people trying to ID, this is Amphidinium, not sure if large or small cell but someone else can try to confirm. i did a 3 day blackout to no...
I’ve been working with Ricky at Copepods.com. He recommended buying copepods to help battle dinoflagellates in my reef tank. My tank has been up and running for 6 years and this was my first time dealing with this nuisance algae. Ricky was amazing! Not only did he answer numerous questions but...
Cheers, all!
I am moving a pair of clowns and a cleaner shrimp (with a couple of snails) into a new and cycled tank. The current tank has been neglected (by me, not intentionally) and is riddled with cyano, nuisance algae, and flatworms (NOT acropora munching ones, thank goodness.) I have...
So as it says a fungi that kills ostreopsis. Maybe in the future it could be cultured and utilized as a natural defense against this horrible Dinoflagellate. I wonder how it would affect coral? Any thoughts?

The past week I noticed my corals opening less and less. The past 3 days the zoanthids are getting longer and growing towards the light. When my feather duster worm is extended, the ends are curled up a bit.
Tested the water and thought my kh was too low, turns out the test kit was very old and...
A couple months back, I made a big mistake of putting unfiltered tap water from my bar sink into my reef tank because I was being lazy, and while nothing happened immediately it eventually messed everything up in my tank. As a result I got a massive bloom of green hair algae and dinoflagellates...
I have tried all day trying to figure out what Dino’s these are comparing with ids of different types. I have a pretty cheap microscope so it was very hard for me to try to get pictures and videos with my camera phone. Worth a shot atleast. Tank is 1 and a Half months old, phosphates bottomed...
Sorry in advance I have a very crappy 20 dollar phone microscope, with a toothpick holder cap as my microscope slide😂 i had chatgpt analyse my videos and said I said 3 different kinds... amphidinium, prorocentrum, ostreopsis I have no idea what to believe at this point as this was a very sudden...

Hey all. I've been fighting this stuff for a couple months now, and I'd really like to make sure 100% that I'm taking the correct steps. I've posted in the dinos megathread, but even with no answer, I was fairly confident I knew what I was dealing with. I've attached a coin microscope video, but...
In today’s video Blaine takes us on a crash course on Dinoflagellates. One, if not the biggest reason, why so many aquarists get out of the hobby is dinos. Let’s get a better understanding of why these problems occur, how we can identify these dino strains, and how to properly rectify these...
I am certain that I have dinos in my tank as the sand, rocks, and glass are becoming covered in stringy algae that has a lot of bubbles wrapped up in the dinos.
Will someone please help me ID what type of dino this is though and possibly give me some steps to take in order to defeat these...
Hello reefers!
I am new to this hobby. My tank is around four months old. I am facing this brown algae situation where the algae blooms at day and disappears at night. This situation arise from the beginning of this month. I am not sure if its diatom or dino.
Please note that My nitrates were...
Today i will be starting the process to stop the situation from the Dino’s I have been having I have already gotten 10 micron filter socks, spongexel, phyto and tisbe pods and seachem silacate test kit
Looking at previous forums it’s saying 1 drop per gallon but reading the bottle from bright...
Hello all. I have a 20g water box cube that keeps bottoming out phosphates and nitrates, which caused Dino’s. I fought Dino’s (prorocentrum to be exact) for over 10 months. I won, but then the diatoms took over and became out of control. We then moved out of an apartment and into a house so i...
Hello, A few months ago I found out that I have poisonous dinoflagellates. Every morning and night (when the lights came on and off) a lot of corals suddenly closed. And by closed I mean completely withdrawn. In the evening, corals closed faster and further than normal. After a few minutes they...
Hi everyone,
So as the title says, I’ve been fighting amphidinium dinos for not exactly sure how long since I had a good amount of snails die before I really got to the root of the problem, but it’s been about 2 weeks of dosing nitrate, phosphate, and silicate along with bacteria, photo, and...
Hi Everyone,
So microscope confirms that I have Dinos. Having a hard time doing a definitive ID. If it helps, they are toxic and have killed all my snails.
Time to research how to get rid of them now.
So I've been scouring the internet for answers, and found lots of pictures of people's tanks with seemingly the same problem, but everyone says it's something else. So I'm hoping I can post my specific situation and someone will know what's going on.
So I've had diatoms, my rocks were golden...
Strangest thing, my dino problems seem to more or less have vanished overnight, note entirely sure how.
I've been having problems with dinos in my 25G reef, confirmed prorocentrum dinoflagellates. Both Nitrate and Phosphate readings have been 0, and it's been a struggle tying to bump up the...
After a recent post I made complaining about diatoms...I was losing the battle and realized as the bloom got worse I may in fact have a Dino issue. I know there are plenty of ways to fight this but I need a bit of guidance. Substrate is 75% covered with them siphoning works but they reappear by...
What suggestions do you guys have for bringing up nitrate and phosphate?
I have a Reefer 300XL and it seems no matter what I do the nitrate and phosphate are extremely low, and now I'm battling dinoflagellates. Even after doubling my feeding and ceasing water changes my nitrate stayed at 0. I...
