To vacuum the sand bed or not when dosing silicate.

I have been facing dinos in my Reefer 170 for more than 9 months now and eventually the prorocentrum have become the dominant one. They’re mainly on the sand bed. For about 3 to 4 months I have been keeping No3 at 5-15 ppm and Po4 at ~0.05 ppm through dosing. And adding live phyto and bacteria...

    'Closed loop' sand vac

Having a daily auto-water change, I very rarely do a manual water change - but occasionally give a vac to my sandbed and filter through a python syphon to a large fine filter sock in my sump. Works great, although it clogs after a few minutes. Wondering if anyone has a better solution for this?

Best siphon/vacuum to physically remove sand from tank?

I set up a 29G quarantine tank and didn't realize I wasn't supposed to put substrate in. I have 3-4 inches of Arag-Alive I need to siphon out. What should I use? I can't use my normal siphon connected to the sink because the sand might destroy the plumbing. I have 5 gallon buckets.

Nano Build Sand vac or no sand vac.

So, I've just set up nano reef, 3 months after converting my 180g to FOT. What can I say, once your got the bug thats it. Lol. And thought it would be interesting to know everyone's thoughts on vaccuming the substrate. I'm stuck between decisions at the moment, ime sand vaccing definitely...

    Share you best vacuum ideas

Hello there, I am looking for your best sump vacuum ideas, ideally something I can hook up to a pump and just run a line out my front door into the grass or a super easy dumping system that doesn't require lugging a ton of buckets. Currently I have a Homedepot bucket shopvac that will let me do...

Anyone 'Close Loop' vacuum detritus through a filter sock?

With daily auto-water changes, i've not 'manually' remove water from my system for a couple of years. Have some dead areas in the bottom of my sump that have collected crap, going to stick a powerhead in there to keep things in motion going forward but about to get in a vac it out. Any reason I...

    Thoughts on electric gravel vacuums?

We have a crushed coral substrate that ranges from coarse grains to pebbles. Not researching substrate extensively is definitely my biggest regret on this build. None of the amazing sand sifting critters should be anywhere near this substrate, so we have bristleworms and nassarius snails that do...

Do you stir your sand bed or vac?

How do you maintain your sand bed? Do you use a gravel vac to clean it out every time you do a water change, do you stir it once a week, or just leave it be? There's some debate about what the best method is -- if you vac, you'll clean out old detritus and keep the water clean, but perhaps pull...

    Raid Spider and Scorpion Spray

I moved into a new house and plan to start my first tank. The house is infested with spiders and I had to spray pretty much everything with raid spider and Scorpion killer. All of my equipment is still unopened and not exposed. When do you think I would be safe to get the tank up and running...

    How to clean sump

My sump is starting to get a build up of detritus. I've seen folks talk about vacuuming out the sump but my sump is only a few inches above the living room floor and I can't seem to get a vacuum started - how do I do this? Do I use a shop vac instead of a typical aquarium "gravel vac?" Thanks!
