It's been a minute since I last posted on here. So far so good for the most part. 5 1/2 weeks running now.
I will have a separate post about the corals with TONS of photos I've been taking, but here is a quick update on them.
Every coral in the tank has shown growth now. Softies are doing very well. Toadstool has continued to grow, the ricordia has really taken off and all paly/zoa's have added 2-6 new polyps. Shortly after turning the light intensity down, the green paly began only half opening and finally closed up completely for several days. I took it out, dipped in revive and placed on sandbed. It hasn't opened 100%, but it's just about there.
The candy cane has added a couple new heads already. The hammer isn't getting any worse, but not really any better either. I still think it has a shot if it can come back from the intense lighting it went through. The other day I noticed a new branch on it's side so that's pretty cool.
Lastly the lepto is also showing growth and eats like a pig when I spot feed.

Now onto what I've been wanting to share for a while. The random other life in my tank both good and bad. Getting an already established tank helped me jump right in, however, it's also allowed for some not so pleasant creatures. Here are a few of the bad ones:

Asterina starfish. I found 2 early on climbing on the arch and took both out.

Apstasia. These things... One good sized one came with the tank. It sat on the old sand. I had no idea what it was so I put it back after replacing the sand. Yeah... I showed someone a photo and they told me to take it out which I did. I've found a couple on frag plugs from one store which I took off before they entered the aquarium, but I must have missed one because one appeared on the plug a few days later. Well, now I'm up to at least 6 that I know of. I'm trying to figure out the best way to get them before they really become a problem. Most are in pretty easy locations, but one pretty large one is ender the arch in a deep hole. I have no idea how that'll come out without taking the rock work apart.

Hydroid jellyfish. These just showed up this past week and are either on the glass or swimming around.

Bristle worms. Good or bad, a few tiny worms came with the tank. I've seen them swimming after lights out too.

The good ones:

Pods of all shapes and sizes. They have really taken off. The small white ones on the glass have exploded to easily over a thousand. They can really coat the glass.
The 2 larger types (tigger and amphipod ) are like cockroaches in the night. A few are large enough to carry a small child away. Seriously they are huge! I'd say there are several hundred of these.

Micro brittle starfish. It came on a plug. Haven't seen since dropping it in.

Sponges and other random filter feeders.

Spaghetti worm. After the very first night, red hair appeared in my new sand. I showed someone a photo and they said it's bad and get it out. So I reach in, grab it, and throw it in a bucket. It moved! I'm like, what is this? I thought the guy said it was cyno or something, but algae shouldn't move. I threw it in the garbage and continued to work on the tank. My wife was researching it and found out it's a good spaghetti worm and told me to find it. I dug through the trash and found it in a tiny puddle on some cardboard. It had been out for about 45 minutes. It looked like a nightcrawler with hair. I threw it in the tank and it eventually buried itself. It still lives in the corner keeping the sand clean. Occasionally I see it's hairs moving food like a conveyor belt. Odd, but cool creature.

A pair of tiny yellow and orange sea slugs. I believe they are Vayssierea felis. Rarely seen.

I've found a few other creatures, but no id yet. Saltwater tanks are definitely full of life!

Feather duster?

I have 4 of these on the glass. Supposedly some sort of filter feeder? They do change position.

7 1/2 weeks running and all I have to say is corals, corals, and more corals!
I never thought I'd be more into coral than fish, but here I am with still the RG, but several more frags to show off. Sure, I want some more fish, but between waiting for the ones we want and the fact there are 357 new corals I want, it's hard to put aside the money for fish. One of these days...

There are now 20 corals in the tank. 8 more have been added within the past couple weeks. Let's start with the first 4. Brian, from Lazy's Coral House, hooked me up with some more beautiful, healthy, and pest free zoas. It was tough to pick only 4, but something has to be left for next time. I added Lazy Lashes, Pink Diamond, Cat Eyes Extreme, and Chrysanthemum. Man these are all bright! Without an orange filter it's hard to really show these things off, but here's a taste.

Last weekend we happened to be near an lfs that is moving so they were having a 30% off sale. I asked my wife if I could look. She said sure, but she didn't want to go in so she sat outside. Dang it, there were a lot of good ones in there, but as tempting as it was to grab 8, 10, or 12, I picked 2. An Utter Chaos (now I know why these are popular, wow!) And a pink/red acan. Not the craziest color, but a unique one and I've been wanting to try an acan anyway.

Now upon leaving the store, my wife decides she want to go look. I stayed outside with the kids and she comes out with 2 more. A Nirvana and a Fire and Ice.

With everything acclimated some have been attached to rock while others will either stay in the sand or we haven't decided where we want them. Below is a fts from yesterday.

Now let's talk growth. Just about every coral has shown some sort of growth. Some more than others. The quickest grower at first was the Armor of God zoa which added 6 polyps in 3 weeks and then stopped. Essentially any zoa/paly has added something. The average has been 3-6 new polyps with some only adding 1-2. My 2 slowest have been the Radioactive Dragon Eyes (1 polyp) and green paly. The green paly closed up hard after my lights went from 40% blue/45% white to 40% blue and 5% white. It stayed closed for 4-5 days before I pulled it, dipped in Revive, and stuck on the sandbed. It continued to remain closed so I put it back in it's old location. It took over 2 weeks before the initial 4 polyps fully opened again. It has several new polyps starting, but none of those have gotten large enough to open yet.
The lighting has seriously stopped or slowed growth in some corals, but not all. The AOG for example quit, the Bam Bams have slowed from a good growth spurt, but several others continue popping polyps. The lps are really enjoying the lower white.
The candy cane is really doing well. It's added 6-8 new heads, but hard to get an accurate count.
The hammer has responded well to the lighting adjustments. I think it got so damaged from excessive lighting that it'll be months before it fully goes back to it's previous state, but it has added 3 new branches at the base which are all slowly growing.
The lepto has some definite growth as well and the ricordia is also putting on some weight.

Last weekend I decided to drop the white down to 3% and up the blue to 45% because the Orange Oxides were starting to brown out on a few polyps. After 4-5 days they reversed themselves and are now looking much better a week later. Everything is looking really good with the current settings so it's my hope I can leave the lights be.
Honestly, I still don't understand light intensity fully. If my whites stay at say 3%, do I always want my blues to stay at their current 45% or is the end goal to have them closer to 100%? Also, I realize white has much stronger par comparatively to blue. I'm assuming I can still overdo it and possibly bleach stuff with blues set really high or at least if it's adjusted really quickly? Am I understanding this correctly? I can't seem to find the answer I'm looking for. So many tanks in the ballpark of mine in regards to using OR lights, having similar height off the water, and tank depth are running 100% blues for their lps/softies and their stuff looks great.

Some coral growth comparisons...

My corals are well fed. They get target fed twice a week with reef roids and target fed up to 4 or 5 times a week with mysis or brine shrimp. I might overdo it, but I let them tell me if they want food or not. If they readily take food, cool, if not, I back off. I usually have some leftover shrimp after feeding the RG so that's why they get target fed so often. Some have great reactions while others don't really do anything. The candy cane, lepto, ricordia, acan, and some of the palys are champions. Occasionally I take photos...

When the candy cane gets a lot of food, I've noticed it doesn't look like this anymore after lights out. It hasn't extended feeder tentacles to this extent in weeks.

Usually if shrimp lands on the lepto it just opens it's mouths and eats. This time the shrimp hovered just over it and a tentacle grabbed it. Pretty cool!

I took a couple photos after feeding reef roids last night. The RG decided to photo bomb both pics.

You can see the folds better when the polyps are retracted on the toadstool.

A couple hours after lights out, I took a brief look with a flashlight and noticed this small snail hitching a ride on a hermit crab(center). I realize it's a terrible photo. It was rather funny to witness.

My wife finally made me do it. She has complained about the placement of the AOG since I glued it maybe 6 weeks ago. She also hates the Orange Oxides and wants me to get rid of them. I picked them out and still like them so I just moved them to a less prominent location. The Utter Chaos took their spot. That massive plug will probably go one of these days. The Fire and Ice took the old AOG spot.
Now that she's happy, at least until she changes her mind overnight, there is a nice area on the rock to stick 3-4 more frags. I have a list. Blue Hornets are a must. There are many other possibilities and we'll see what ultimately happens, but a few contenders are Blue Eyed Blonde, Magicians, AOI, and Sunny Ds just to name a few.

Here is the new look taken right after the move when some corals weren't happy. Also, the hammer moved about an inch to the left and placed more upright. After weeks in this location, I realized the glue never attached it to the rock and it had just been sitting there. My wife also didn't like it at an angle so perfect excuse to fix it lol

Then there are the corals... As mentioned before, we have some sort of paly, a toadstool mushroom, and potentially a hairy mushroom. The hairy mushroom looked like 2 pieces of chewed up bubble gum. Pink and slimy just hanging off the rock as 2 blobs. I doubted they would survive. I couldn't tell what they were. Over the next week, the one blob began to show bright green spots and it went from a blob to a round disk. Each day more green spots would appear and it started to look alright. The other blob broke off the rock at some point and floated away. It anchored in on another rock and now has a few green spots so it might make it. I don't know if these were severely bleached or what, but the damaged parts are now white, not pink and slowly coloring up to the other part. Each day you can see them healing up little by little.

When we bought the RG, we also picked up a really cool orange ricordia mushroom. Incredibly bright orange with purple stripes and 2 green mouths. A few days later we went to a different place and they had some nice zoas. We thought why not buy 2. Then they said they were 20% off so we bought 3 instead. Ok great, this should do us for a bit. I was happy, but my birthday was a couple days ago and my wife surprised me with corals from Lazy's Coral House. Let me give a shout out to him. Seriously I've been eyeing his stuff for awhile. The local shops don't really have great coral. His photos are like a lot of online places where you don't know if the pic is doctored up or if it's for real. Well, they really are just like the photos. Just really, really good quality. And then there is his customer service. My wife told me he was very easy to work with and answered any questions she had. Apparently my wife was asking about getting a small hammer frag. He said he'd just give it to us. Wow! My wife ended up ordering a zoa (bam bams) too. So we go to pick it up and not only was the packaging great(he boxed them up with heat packs for local pickup) and the corals looked solid, he gave me yet another free coral. A jack o lantern leptoseris. Seriously I was stoked! The texture on this thing is wild! I highly recommend Lazy's Coral House for his quality corals and will be placing another order after I save up. If you see this, thanks again!

My wife added one more zoa from the "budget rack" at a LFS and a local reefer had a 30 head kryptonite candy cane for an insanely low price. My wallet is dry from all of this so nothing new will be added for probably 6 weeks or so. This will also give everything time to get established. It will also allow us to sit back, enjoy, and keep an eye on parameters etc. I've been maintaining 0 ammonia/nitrites and 5-10ppm nitrates. PH is 8.4 and salinity is 1.026. As of now, 3 of the zoas are just sprouting 1-2 new polyps each so something is going right!

The below photos are pretty terrible quality, but you get the point I suppose. Also, I bought glue a couple days later so almost everything is mounted.

A couple more recent photos of the RG. He's still a very private fish. When the pumps turn off for feeding, he's out and about. When the lights are off, but there is light in the tank ie in the morning, he'll hang out behind or under the arch. It's still pretty uncommon to see him with lights on and pumps on at the same time. I'm hoping he'll come out more when we get other fish. He's definitely not nearly as paranoid as before, but not super active. Today marks 7 weeks I've had him and 8 weeks since getting the tank.

These guys are probably the family's favorite creatures to watch right now. We call them elephant snails due to their snorkels. There are 2 large and 2 tiny ones in the tank. They are like sharks when any type of food comes into the tank and make excellent vacuum cleaners. I hate the slime coat they produce though.

I have more to report, but not much time for a full review. However, after having the tank for 9 weeks and the RG has been in there for 8 weeks, we finally added new fish!
A clownfish pair was the most likely next addition with a wrasse being the next possibility. My wife really likes Flurry, Snowflake, and Picasso clowns. She gets to decide the clowns. I personally don't like the practically all white ones, but Picassos are cool. The problem has been that all lfs in the area are either sold out, way overpriced, or don't have a pair. So we've put them on hold for a while. That is, until I informed my wife you don't have to get an identical pair. This thought opened possibilities.
I went to my favorite lfs on Friday to rent a PAR meter that has been finally made available. The family tagged along. There was one Snowflake that she really wanted and it's been there for a while. They also had Flurry clowns and the similar Wyoming ones too. While they were out of Picasso, they did have Da Vinci. She decided on the one Snowflake and the coolest looking Da Vinci. Sweet, new fish for the tank! It'll be nice to see something swim around now.
I always do a lengthy observation at the store, followed by asking to see the fish eat. Then, I do even more inspections while in the bag. I have a QT tank setup, minus water because that makes sense... The fish at this lfs are treated and the Snowflake has been there at least 3 weeks. The Da Vinci at least a couple weeks. I'll take my chances so into the DT they went. Ever since being introduced, they have not left each other for the most part. They pick a spot and stay there. They're definitely not exploring type fish, but they are constantly swimming.
I did have a scare this morning. I woke to the Snowflake floating on it's side in a dead spot of the tank. Oh no. It was still breathing, but essentially motionless. I remembered reading that some people have had similar experiences with perfectly healthy fish. Sure enough, about 30 minutes later it was back to normal. Weird.

Since I'm on the topic of fish, does anyone know why Mccoskers wrasse are so difficult to find? I have been unable to find any locally. The one lfs said they haven't seen any available in over a year. With the exception of one website, they are out of stock online too that I've seen. I'm curious if these are affected by a collection ban or what?
A wrasse will be the next fish addition. Not anytime really soon though. The Mccoskers is my top choice while a Lubbock is likely second. At least I've seen these locally.

The main lfs near me recently made 2, Apogee 510 PAR meters available for rent and I finally was able to rent one out for 5 days. Definitely very useful. I have a ton of data, but I'll wait to post on here until I get around to putting numbers on a photo. Right now I just have a few sheets of paper with a tank drawing that looks like a 5 year old drew with numbers all over it.
Overall it's nice to finally know what's going on in my tank lighting wise. Some corals are in a great spot while others probably need to move. Some are in way higher PAR than I ever would have put them in, but are still doing quite well so I'll leave those. The problem child, however, is my Utter Chaos. I can't figure it out and it's not doing so well. We'll save that for a separate post.

I added another coral over week ago. A Dragon Soul favia. I've been eyeing this for a while now. In the store it looked like this too. I'm hoping it will color up in time. Before the PAR meter, it was sitting in around 150 PAR (pictured). I read that lower lighting can really help bring the color out so it has since been moved to a spot with about 90 PAR.

I also made my first ever BRS order yesterday. Probably not my last lol I'll have a Salifert magnesium test and a Hanna phosphate checker coming in next week so I'll finally be able to test those.
Additionally, a new RO membrane, (2) carbon, sediment, and DI resin was ordered as well. My RODI unit, while still showing 0 TDS, is making a whopping 5 gallons in 4.5-5 hours. Since it was showing 0 TDS when I bought it, I've been using it since the previous owner kept the filters wet. It's going way too slow so I'm thinking something is likely clogged. When I first bought it, I would get 5 gallons in about 4 hours. Not much better.

Some other random photos...

I've been watching my hammer branch over the past month or so. Pretty interesting process, but it finally did it.
