Drain the water out until there is only a few inches in the bottom. Much easier to catch then. Refill with the same water.

I've been trying to figure out what to do with these mangroves.

For some odd reason I love these guys!
Lost 6 out of last 12 by osmotic shock.
So I bought seeds this time and stuck some directly in the sand.
Yesterday I got sponges that fit across my sump and cut holes in them for the other dozen.
They are starting to root and I'm just going to leave them in the sponges.
I'll update and hopefully they will do OK.

I wrote these instructions for someone who is going to be watching my tank while I am in St. Louis. They will leave Saturday, the 3rd to meet me in MI. How do they sound? I will make sure to go over the list and show her how to do everything before I leave.

MONDAY

- Say "Alexa, turn off pump." If it worked, check the back chamber. The water level should be increasing.
-Take 3 full jars of water out of the tank, put it in bucket labeled "WWC" (waste water change).
- Take 3 full jars of new saltwater from the bucket labeled "MSW" (make saltwater) add it to the tank.
- Say, "Alexa, turn on pump." The water level should now be going down in the back chamber.
- Take out Mysis shrimp from freezer (located in the top right of the freezer) and let thaw until there is no ice left (15 mins)
- Add mysis (roughly the amount I showed you)
- Put mysis back into freezer
- Make sure all fish ate; check their health (Is there any visible injuries), and check coral (are their polyps out?)

TUESDAY

- (Repeat of Monday)

WEDNESDAY

- (Reapeat of Monday)

THURSDAY

- (Repeat of Monday)

FRIDAY

- (Repeat of Monday)
- Fill auto reservoir with water from the bucket labeled with nothing.
- Put auto feeder in back right corner. It's already on, just use the slider on the top and push it back 2-3 clicks.
- Setup camera if it's not already

SATURDAY

- The lights will be off before you leave. Just check the auto reservoir is full, and the auto feeder is properly on the tank. Check with a flashlight in the tank that everything looks good.

I would use some tape to mark how much water to fill the bucket and jars up to. My sitters like it when I use little snack ziplocks labeled with the date for the food. Pre portioned is easier for them. Make sure to table the "nothing" bucket with Nothing, just for laughs.
Do you have a skimmer? I would make sure that won't overflow back into the tank while your gone.

Yes - I have a skimmer rated up to 30 gallons on my 15g, so it doesn't skim much at all. I basically have it there for the gas exchange. But good point, I will empty the skimmate before I leave just to be extra safe.

I was thinking about pre-portioning the food, but I only have three small fish, so the food going into the bag would be very little and may just become a headache to get out.

flexible mesh...I got some at a fabric store my girl took me to her idea. It is the mesh stuff grandma etc use to do needle point. Use yarn or something to make pictures...It comes in different sizes. We had to tie two together with yarn to make it big enough to section off the 300( 24 inches tall) ...we just put it in there leave a big opening, put food in the area you want them in and then close it and go fishing...works like a charm....

That's a good idea too, and that may actually work in my tank. Thanks for taking the time to reply. This or the trap mentioned earlier will surely get it for me.

I have a few hammer corals and some zoas in my tank. Do you think I'd be able to remove a significant amount of water without damaging my ecosystem? It's a 40 gallon tank. Thanks very much for your reply.

For the small amount of time it will take to drain catch and refill they will be fine.
