Your biggest things is heat and aeration. Aerarion being the most important. Every few minutes scoop water and carefully dump back in.

There was a breakfast restaurant I used to go to from time to time in Atlanta that had a whole bunch of parrots and other birds there. I think it was on PeachTree.

R Thomas Deluxe Grill in Atlanta was the place. You hung out with all the parrots while waiting for a table. They had a lot but that was also 20 years ago.

are you heating the house with a fireplace or something? if your parents are able to keep the house heat up, it won't drop as fast. bubblers your local LFS should have. possibly even a nearby Walmart. I put mine in the tank whenever I have a storm coming or away as a back up. and plugged into the UPS for when that goes out.

so you got a battery generator? make sure how long it will last for. once the heater kicks on, it will go quick.

There you can take a bucket of water from the tank, heat it without going over the temperature and put it back again.
