Additional Aquarium Information

What do you think are the keys to your success in reefing?
Patience
I'm thinking i will do some testing and see if (a) my rodi water tests positive for any phosphate and (b) my premixed salt has any phosphate. If both of those seem not to be the problem then I know it's either my food or my sand and rock, correct? I am fighting a rather bad case I cyano right now and wonder if the high phosphates are contributing to that
I am not able to read phosphate with Hannah ulr since 1 year (except if I put lanthanum daily), cyano appeared when my nitrate went down and I am assuming phosphate stay the same. Just finishing my chemiclean treatment.

Im just worried because from what I hear, high phosphates would hinder calcification which sounds to me, would hinder sps from growing which is my end goal. I want a mixed reef but I want to be sps dominant

For sure my high phosphate impacts growth. After SPS RTN incident during my holidays I went to LPS road.

I'm doing research now. If there's one thing I'm good at it's overthinking things :grinning-face-with-sweat: i have a gfo reactor in the pile of misc fish stuff. I may get it going to get my phosphates doesn't to<.90 and watch how fast it climbs back up?

It's not a big house but there's a lot of space to sleep lol, the women on the sofa and in the bed in another room and the men on the floor ;)
You got a garage?

Okay I've been nixed on the forum before for this but here goes my friend.
Cyno can/will grow in any tank, mature or otherwise.
It's a bacteria which is out competing better, more desirable algae, whether that be green, brown, orange. Whatever.
I've only had Cyno when phos or trates were 0,or super close.
There's a balance of nutrients each tank maintains and it's different in every tank.
Some call it and follow the redfield ratio, which I mentioned yesterday.
I don't know if any tank hits that ratio but there is a ratio nonetheless.
My little tank has been disconnected from my big tank for months now.
I'm getting Cyno in there so I tested and sure enough, 0 phos, 2 trates.
Yikes!
I haven't changed water in there for months how can this be?
Whether I'm making sense I don't know but right now my suggestion is to blast all cyno areas with more flow and don't do a water change.
Nothing wrong with cyno it's just ugly.
As soon as I get my son to school we can discuss the gfo.
Short version:
Trates are too low, phos too high.
Doubting salt/rodi has any phos.
Most likely food but mostly leaching from rocks. Very common.

I bought a used mp40 off of marketplace that should be arriving Thursday so I can move that powerhead under the overflow(not sure if you saw my pic where i said that powerhead was temporary or not) so I'll have 2 jebao sdw 16 and a mp40 with 2 return random flow generators pushing about 1200ish gph. I think that should be enough flow if I set it up properly. Although I wonder if I won't want a small powerhead or two that I can aim.

Please realize that all I say is my own opinion.
I'm no scientist and consider myself a mediocre reefer.
Just trying to help.
I'm Joel by the way.
Think it's time you forked over your name. ;)

No worries Joel, I'm not about to hold anyone accountable regardless. It's all a low paced, long term experiment for all of us. If you have insight that I can take into consideration and add to my knowledge/understanding all the better, but ultimately how I choose to act on the information is on me, and the outcome is on me, and the names Mike :)
