There's nothing better than a good shake up, Keith. I've learned so much more from people's actual experiences in reefing than from the experts or even some conventional wisdom. It's funny I was about to post my gonis and be proud of myself because they've lived more than a month in my tank lol.

Rights now, I'd say they are sitting in about 150, but I'm interested in what you're saying here and can't/wouldn't argue with your results. Please let me know when you post your article. Good stuff, Rock.

On my new build I am going to run two metal halide flanked by two Orphek blue plus and two orphek day reef crest. The bars will be for ramp up and down, then turn way down while the halides are on for 5 hours. It is gonna be EPIC!!

Nothing quite matches MH. I used to keep gonis under mh and they did fine for 6-8 months and when they went I don't think it had anything to do with light. No idea what the PAR was but it was probably way more 100-150. We didn't know about their need for manganese, we didn't have gonipower, or benepets, or reef roids. I think they basically just wasted away.

I've only seen it once called a Kidaran torch. I got my through my friends wholesaler though. It was CHEAP...well, kind of. Lol
I saw it anf said I wanted it. The wholesaler doesn't have names on them. I picked it out of about 600 torch pictures.

You are correct. Gonis when introduced were new and were recommended for 'experts' only. Now, they thrive in so many reefers tanks. As the community gained knowledge anf shared knowledge, the keeping of gonis has become much easier.

Also, the front torch is one of my favorites. Some tentacles are solid purple, some solid yellow, some this weird mottled mix.
This is under about 350 PAR

Good evening Smorg family.
I was messing with the tank and broke out my PAR meter just for something to do. I know most online retailers and a lot of hobbyist say to keep goniopora in low - moderate light. I have seen anywhere from 50 - 250 mentioned. Actually only one time at 250 and that was in 'extreme' cases. Well, I've had my goniopora probably 6 weeks now. It came from a friend's tank who aquacultures LPS and SPS. He keeps most his LPS in 300-350 PAR during a 5 hour peak period.
Anyway, I got my goni in and put it on the outer edge of my tank. About two weeks in I noticed it wasn't happy. So I moved it to a spot directly under a supplemental light I have for the magnifa anemone. This is on top of the Kessil a360x running at 90% intensity during peak, mostly white, very little blue. Same as my friends tank. Anyway. That spot averages 325-350 PAR for 5 hours a day. Since moving the goni it has grown considerably.
Sorry for the blurry pic, my photography skills are lacking. I am going to write an article which will more than likely ruffle some feathers regarding PAR and spectrum.

I'm not saying anyone is wrong. I think it is a marketing ploy to sell the extreme blue LEDs. The ocean water at 40m doesn't even have the amount of 'blues' the major LED companies are pushing in there stuff. They also leave out all the greens...which actually compromise about half of the spectrum at 40m, which is 120 feet. That's about the deepest LPS are collected. Most are collected alot shallower since the divers normally aren't scuba diving. It has to be in one breath. My information comes from a great article by Dana Riddle.

I will say that I prefer the look of the blues personally and that's what's important.

With that said, there are so few deep ocean corals collected that, as you mentioned, there is plenty of white light available to them in the wild.

So speaking of the supplemental light for the magnifica anemone. Its a hygger 36w. I must say I am TRULY impressed with this light. I have it about 4 inches off the water surface above the anemone which is literally at the water surface and it produces about 700 PAR to the nem. I also have two on my rock grow out tub that has grown that baseball size piece of macro I brought back from the Dominican to over a volleyball size since March.
Yes, it crawled up there about a week after it arrived. I bought the hygger and it hasn't moved since.
