You leave enough room in the sump for the extra water. When the water drops below the weir, no more water flows to the sump. The tricky thing is to make sure the siphon starts again when power comes back. Some of them include a sort of doser pump to pull out air and get the siphon going again. @00W Joel sounds like he has lots of experience with it.

That you set your water level in the same off your tank with the pump shut off. It will only drain down to the top of the overflow in the tank, before it breaks siphon

My dad keeps asking about a safety system what do I tell him? He's worried about it overflowing.

That happens with HOB overflows. We've tried recommending what to do but you want to do your own thing.

That happens with HOB overflows. We've tried recommending what to do but you want to do your own thing.

I'm trying to listen. I just got out of school and haven't had time to read everything. I've gotten a lot of information in the span of 6 hours. I already said I'm not jumping into a sump Idmeadiatly just asking and making a plan because I do still want to switch even after I get gha and nutrients under control. I do have the money to do this now but I'm still not going too.

You have a valid point sir. Marineland tanks only have the bottom tempered to save costs. It would be "ok" to use a HOB, but not optimal. I think Tim has ran a HOB overflow before without issues. I ran one for 5 years on a freshwater planted 220 gallon tank and had all sorts of issues. It's a personal decision in the end honestly. If it were "ME"...excluding other factors, I would drain the tank halfway and drill it. But, again, that's me.

Or....just do basic husbandry, regular maintenance and call it a day. My "temporary" tank only has a heater, powerheads, lights, and a surface intake filter on it. Been that way since December and I have exceptional growth. No water changes, controllers, etc. I do dose AFR at 30ml daily because my corals consume that much. Its a 40 gallon BTW

Same here. There another DIY video about drilling a tank that has water in it. He drills the hole freehand because he's drilling from the side. I never understood why you couldn't clamp a plywood guide on one side and a solid piece of plywood behind to do a horizontal drill. Just go easy on the pressure. Or if you use a drill guide like we did you could clamp that to one side of the glass, or screw it to the plywood guide and clamp that to the glass. Clamp gently though. If you used a drill through overflow you wouldn't be using a 2" drill like I did and it would easily clear the drill guide. I had to use the drill itself to drill out the guide before I could drill the glass.
