Additional Aquarium Information

What do you think are the keys to your success in reefing?
Patience
@tbrown ive read about using baking soda. how do you do it?
Mix well with RODI water (except I always just use tap water) and dump it in the return section of the sump. There's calculators.

This is the easiest and the one I use most frequently - it's always an open tab on my phone.

Make sure you calculate approximate water volume, not total volume because they're different. I usually estimate about 80% total volume for my water volume and it usually gets me fairly close with my tanks.

I also use 80% for all of my calculations. On every tank that I have ever measured the actual water volume versus the 'theoretical volume of water based on outer dimensions of a tank with nothing in it but water' it has come out plus or minus 2% from the 80%, so between 78% and 82%. It even held true for tanks with sumps, AIOs, and HOB tanks. The only time I saw a bigger fluctuation was on a tank that had an insane amount of rock in it, too much to actually use as a DT. It was for 'aging' a bunch of rock. That one was something like 71%.

EDIT: If you are using all artificial/man made rock it may vary more as some of that 'rock' is not very porous but I did measure a 15 gallon Waterbox that used 15 pounds of CaribSea Life Rock and about a pound of natural rubble and its actual volume was about 11.8 gallons so close enough.

So one of my hammers acts very torch like any ideas why? Can you see how long it's tentacles get? It's the one on the left...
Pics? Ha, did you see that Tim!

How far should I drop it too?
The main thing is not to drop it too fast. Your corals won't like you very much. Keep a check on parameters and monitor your algae growth to determine your ideal ranges

Look at the purple tips on that torch!!...

It's not supposed to be a torch it's supposed to be a hammer and the little tips are very hammer shaped... if it's a torch I need to move it away from the hammers right?

I've done a 180 from testing and pushing for 8.5 dead on to watching the corals and occasionally testing and making broad adjustments. For example, if I see alk dip below 7, I increase my AFR a bit. Right now I'm dosing 60mL per day in my 40, so if it goes below 7, I'll increase to 65mL and check again later (couple weeks-couple months). Corals should look happy during this time, or better test again if not. I only have easy SPS and lots of LPS and softies, so that might not work if I decide to get into harder SPS.
Thats great advice, Jojo. I just added a few digis and anacropora to my mostly LPS 40. I know things are about to change in the routine a little.

Don't go by me, I'm half blind, and I went to public school. You have a better look at it than I do. I have a long polyp hammer too, looks like decent spacing either way

It could be a Frammer...?

Ya, I’ve been trying to figure it out since seeing it. The tips look less hammer like and more torch like . The extension is more torch like as well. My hammers tips are hammer shaped and they stay close together. The corals are far enough apart until we figure it out. Do you have a picture of it when you first got it?
