I will say this which is unrelated to everything

1) I really was impressed by FedEx recently
2) ups made me extremely upset today

If anyone wants the deets let me know
And I'll say this, which is also unrelated. One of the major differences between Creole and Cajun Gumbo is tomatoes.... Carry on.

vintage, i was going to ask you what you put your plates on? i know you said that you like to keep them off of the sand
Depends on size

Babies that start off 1/2” to 1” I put on a plug. When they get larger then the plug i put the plug on a eco rock frag mount

In pic below the white stone under the plate is the plug. The dome rock under is the eco rock plug mount.

Plates have a under skeleton that grows along the surface it rests on. It doesn’t actually encrust. It’s more like…non adhesive encrusting.

If you put them on something flat, lkke sand bed, they will grow as a flat plate which is typical. And fine, until the day you have a paramater out of whack, or a crab/shrimp/fish bites or, or a who knows what event, that causes the coral to retract in. And then sand gets in the skeletal ridges. And then when the coral opens again it either gets scraped by the fine sharp sand grains, or, it senses the sand grains and opens up everywhere except that spot. Regardless. That spot then becomes a hazard and often goes unnoticed or mistreated. It’s an open door into the coral for bacteria and infections. And this simple explanation is why I believe many many people lose plate corals

Ok. I rambled. <stay on target. Stay on target>

With the method below, you will have a plate that grows to be volcano shaped! I don’t know if anyone has seen volcano shaped plates before and wonder how it’s done, well, this is how. It will overgrow the plug, and then grow down along the eco rock and form a mound shape plate. In my experience it will take approx 1.5-2 years depending on starting size. So the eco rock will hold you over for a while.

Once it over grows the eco rock, I would suggest mounting to a frag mount tile. 3x3. 4x4. I’ve seen circular ones. Some people use Home Depot ceramic tile but I am unsure what type to recommend that’s reef safe. Can do your own research there. Bottom of eco rock is flat and smooth. Perfect for some gorilla glue gel to attach to the next mount device. From that time onwards the plate will level out and grow flat.

The plate was put on a plug, just like the earlier example, but I had not found the eco rock product yet. So the plug was put in my frag rack. It overgrew the plug, very nicely I must say, and now is at the frag rack level. It will now taper off and grow flat. Unless, I elevate it further. I need to assess this guy to see if an eco rock is an option or if it’s too late.

Now, I’d you already have a flat plate that is larger than a plug, and in need of secure mounting, I would advise to get it on a tile and then just put the tile in the sand and check daily to make sure the tile isn’t getting submerged in the sand. The flat smooth tile is a safe surface for the plate to grow along and much safer than being in the sand. I would attach with a SOLID ring made from a long noodle of reef putty. You don’t want critters and pests getting under your plate coral and boring holes in it.

Think of a pool float

You want to make this shape from reef putty and put on the underside of the plate, then smush that onto the tile so there are no gaps or pathways under the plate. It can dry and solidify under water. A few days later check that it dried and didn’t contract and make holes. These can be filled with more epoxy or gel super glue. Your plate will now be secure.

Oh yea smush it down on the tile so the plate is maybe 1/4-1/2 inch above the tile. We don’t need it 1” up in the air. We want it to look natural and the closer the tile the better. In a few weeks / months the new growth will extend to the tile and cover the gap. Smaller the gap the faster it’s hidden

If anything doesn’t make sense let me know!

Bookmarked this one for future, great tips and great writing

I have actually started mounting almost all my “sandbed” lps on these eco rock mounts. They are sold in some LFS that carry the brand, I hear they are 4/5$ Each. My lfs doesn’t have them. I buy them 10 at a time from a member here that has access, he sells them for 4$ a piece when I buy 10

I put scoly, cynarina, trachy on them. I put zoa plugs on them so they can overgrow and make me zoa dome colonies one day. Same with acans. They are heavy enough to hold torches and hammers also

If you click on the photos, and the click the button so they open in their own page, you can zoom better.

You’ll see almost all the “traditional” sandbed corals, along with mushrooms, zoa, and even acans in the very back, are all on these eco rock mounts, or elevated in another way, or on a tile

I lost a PRIZED wellso colony, 6+” and a rare color variant, because something bumped it without me noticing and one of the back folds ended up being slightly submerged in the sand. It was tilted diagonally backwards ever so slightly and I didn’t notice. After a few days the sand eroded the tissue. Then the coral got infection. That’s when I realized and saw what happened. I tried my best to save it. Daily 6-10 hour kfc dips with a buffet of antibiotics, and at the end of each one I’d return to the tank. It would look better in the morning and by evening the infection would be back stronger than the day before. It spread uncontrollably. And it was around this time that I just learned of the eco rock mounts and had just started using them.

Had I had it on one of them all along, I would have never been in the situation and lost the coral. I lost that coral and immediately started moving my sandbed corals on these mounts.

I find Cynarina to be most resilient to sand and have only moved one so far, the green one in the below pics. I have had no I’ll effects but notice it is shaped like a mushroom cap instead of a donut. An interesting observation. I do not think it’s causing harm but I also do not know if it’s necessary.

And if anyone is interested in my insanity plate coral, this is the day I got it. I glued it to this plug so it wouldn’t get blown in the sand and die and so I could keep track of it

1) I really was impressed by FedEx recently
2) ups made me extremely upset today

If anyone wants the deets let me know

FedEx experience: I sold an item on eBay. China set. It’s been taking up space and I wanted a cabinet for storage. I put it up on eBay. I honestly didn’t care to get its full value. Told myself if I can walk away with 100$ after fees and shipping I’d be happy.

I put it on eBay. 100$ starting bid, and told eBay the dimensions and weight and let eBay add the shipping charge. It’s customized to the location of the buyer so everyone gets an different shipping price, but bottom line is whoever buys it pays min of 100$ plus sh

Turns out. Nobody wanted it! It sat on eBay over a year she just kept auto-relisting for free. I moved it to storage and forgot about it.

A few weeks ago I get a notification - the China set sold! Woah. Didn’t even know that was still on eBay. Ok let’s see what I got. 100 + 40 sh.

Well..after ebay 19.5% fee, I ended up with roughly $70 lower than I wanted but figured hey. I’m lucky this even sold and I don’t need it. Time to pack and ship

I packed this set so carefully. 25 feet of air bubbles. Double rows of those air pillows that are like 3”x2”. Double layer on the bottom, sides and top. Every dish and cup was wrapped and has styrofoam sheets between them. Then put in storage cases. Placed in the box on top of the bubble layers. Then peanuts dumped in. And more air pillows filling every single free spot. And more pillows on top and the box a taped and sealed.

I go to eBay and the buyer paid 40$ sh and eBay tells me cheapest way to shis is FedEx ground for 41$. I don’t like FedEx. I have a ups account with discounts so I login and see what rare item I can get. They wanted 60$. So FedEx through eBay it is!

Ship the item. It’s delayed. Was supposed to be 3 days. It took around 8. Weather as bad and every sh company was having delays from holiday times so I don’t really hold them too accountable. Everything was delayed this time of year

Buyer contacted me. Box dented. Plates broken. Ugh. In the end he has enough plates and things to make a set of 8 but not 12. And he said he only needed 8 but now doesn’t have extras / backups. I totally get it. I told him I’ll make it right and offered 50% refund, $50 and he was happy to take it. My profit is now down to a measly 20$

A few days later I’m like hey, I’m the shipper, he paid me but I bought the label. I’m contacting FedEx and making a claim for the damage.

They have an online form and ask you to price the value of the broken items, give pics if possible, and ask a bunch of info. So I get pics of the broken plates and items from websites selling replacements and pics of the dented box. They ask the tracking number of the item and they ask how much I paid in sh. I file my claim online.

They wrote back saying it’s being reviewed and then they wrote back and say the claim is approved in my favor!

They saw my spreadsheet of damaged items value was over 100$ (20$ per plate, 10$ Per saucer etc). They don’t care what the item was sold for on eBay. They only care about the items value.

They say I didn’t pay for additional insurance so it comes with 100$ by default and they are reimbursing me $100 + $40 sh. What?!?! I get the shipping charge refunded also!? They pay you via check and sure enough about 10 days later a check for 140 was in my mailbox.

If the item arrived perfect, I would have made 70$
With the damage, the refund I gave the buyer, and the claim money, I ended up with $160! And the buyer really needed an 8 piece set and got an 8 piece set with some random extras for only 50$ + sh

Everybody wins! Goooo fedex for a hassle free claim process

Ups was supposed to pickup two boxes of coral today that I sold and was shipping

I packed them, activated heat packs and put outside. They were scheduled to pickup by 5:30. They didn’t show up. I called around 5:40 and after 45 min theh admit they have a glitch affecting notifying the drivers of pickup locations. They tell me they can’t contact drivers in the area directly and I will need to take it to ups myself. It’s 6:05 and they close 6:30. They are 20 min away and I’m not ready to leave. I won’t make it.

I ended up packing up all this coral wasting 4 heat packs and then had to unpack, put it back in my tank, notify the buyers of the delay. And tomorrow ill have to pack it all up again, use 4 more heat packs and have a new pickup scheduled. I paid 5$ for pickup and they wouldn’t refund me and said they will pickup tomorrow instead and they didnt even apologize !

Usps made me very upset yesterday.... wouldn't deliver my package because there was a 6" pile of snow from the plow truck at the end of my driveway, but the rest of the driveway was clean and the package was supposed to be here Friday but sat at their hub "processing" for 3 or 4 days before it shipped..

Oh that’s bs

Oh that’s bs
Luckily it's nothing live or temp sensitive. But it is my microbactor7 which no one carries around me and I want to start dosing that to fight my cyano issues. And a gooseneck for my kessil h80 because I think i want a refugium
