Additional Aquarium Information

What do you think are the keys to your success in reefing?
Patience
I have to say that Aiptasia can be quite beautiful at times, especially some of the big ones but they really spread like wildfire and there is NO control of where they will go.
That's my biggest issue.
I did read an article and saw some pictures of someone using a huge Aiptasia garden as filter feeders and their nutrients were super low.
I've also been told that they grow even worse in tanks that are overfed, like mine.
I remember getting my first Aiptasia back in the late 70s and thinking "Oh wow, cool". Boy was I naive.

They can be pretty.

I have quite a few in my refugium and I leave them alone. They help filter the tank and can't hurt anything back there. If a few make it back to the display, nudi food.

It seems to me that the 'fleshier' the sessile, or nearly-sessile invertebrate the 'dirty' they like their environment.

I have some in my sump, none of them getting to the giant phase, not enough food but I just leave them there.
Good filter feeders.
I have noticed the giant ones can sting even me so I can only imagine what they do to everything else.
My trigger will rip them apart if random food has fallen on them but even he leaves them alone.
I too remember long ago my first aiptasia and I thought cool, a random coral on my rock!
Nope I was wrong.

thank you! ill try to move stuff around. i wasnt sure what they were ok with touching
The ones I've had touch zoas and have no problems. I keep them from touching each other, because one is a Cycloseris and one is a Heliofungia. They are currently separated by a zoa frag or two.

ive got a sandbed. i cant attach pics anymore. i guess something is going on with the site. idk. i have them on a stand to keep them up off the sand a bit, but in a shaded area. just wondering if thats the problem...

Got home the royal gramma ate and seems to be swimming better but it’s abdomen looks like it’s about to explode. Dropsy?

Looks like me after this cruise last week.

Sorry Kev, hope it isn't a serious situation and the gramma just clears it.

Maybe he's constipated?
Thanks both of you, I’m not hopeful but I didn’t think it would make the night. Didn’t come out to eat this morning so I was really surprised to see him come out to eat tonight.

I feed mine a couple of times a week, sometimes more. TDO pellets work fine, or leftover slurry from my Reef Nutrition mix (PacPods, ROE, RotiFeast, OysterFeast, Mysis). It tolerates a range of PAR, and I currently have it at a pretty intense spot (probably hitting 180-200 PAR on the sand bed), but I'd definitely work up to there and not start at high PAR. I've found my plates do better when they are on the sand bed surrounded by something. I keep my two plates in the front of the tank surrounded by zoas.

They seem to like that, as they get some flow and don't get lots of sand blowing on them. The zoas on the other hand... they are getting blasted by the wrasses.

Oh well, they bounce back, and I'd rather have a few ticked off zoas than ticked off plates.

My plates aren't in optimal position just now, as the zoa garden is being reorganizes/regrown, but here is what it was like in the 40--which was too crowded.

Egg bound?

Egg bound?
I don’t think so. A couple of decades ago after I learned my lesson with a neon dottyback I got one and had it for years and it never spawned.

@kevgib67 I'd suggest posting that in the fish disease forums. My tailspot belnny got incredibly constipated. He didn't eat and looked like was going to explode. Eventually, he started eating and then his belly looked better.

Thanks Walker, I’m pretty sure there is not much that can be done but I’ll give it a shot. Enjoy your vacation and we expect more pictures soon, real soon!

With good news always comes bad news. I was feeding the tank now and found it strange not to see the Halichoeres chrysus. It turns out that I don't know how or when, but it jumped out of the tank. I just found it under the stand.
